sometimes i am really puzzled why toyota is so slow is adapting to new technology. took them years to have apple integration and they lost big to competitors, and same here again with car play.
more than a decade ago lexus was way ahead on technology with their navigation and audio systems. but now they are behind. they need to work very hard to not just catch up but be in the front again

"CarPlay will show up in additional 2019 cars from Toyota and Lexus that run the company’s Entune 3.0 (for Toyota) and Enform 2.0 (for Lexus) infotainment platforms as well. It has yet to clarify whether or not 2018 models already running those platforms will get support through a software update."
Since they are not supporting wireless and use USB 2.0, it should be a simple port of the software. No big issues supporting older models, except to reduce testing and support costs.

May be technically possible, but won't happen. Toyota needs a reason for people to get new cars.

But now, with Auto and CarPlay, Toyota is being asked to use someone else's technology. Any good technology company will be careful and will do it due diligence before implementing someone else's technology.

A decade ago, Toyota was working with its own technology so it knew exactly what is in it and what it can do.

Hey hey hey now, our motto is "we dont mess around with reliability" is the company line. Inside tho, im sure they were probably thought, if our vehicles are class leading in sales without Carplay damn why even fix something not broken....More money less work

toyota is just slow, simple as that. all we need to look at is the ipod integration, took them years to implement and years later they are still now behind competitors. the ipod / iphone in my lexus crashes every now and then and the system doesn't even display other characters

i'd say insular, cautious, and more vertically integrated than other companies... basically they do their own thing. this can be good and it can be bad. but because EVERYTHING's moving to the cloud and car companies have no idea what they're doing in the cloud, they must partner with someone, or perish. toyota's partnering sort of with amazon, which is risky because amazon doesn't make phones (yet).
