Don't be fooled, its more BMW engineered and built junk. At least with those old Minis, if it broke you could mend it with a screwdriver, a pair of pliers, a socket set, and a big hammer. The new ones are pretty dubious to me in terms of reliability and cost of ownership, one is rather low and the other is shockingly high.

I'm not too high on Mini's either. I just like the unique touches. Sort of how the Jeep Renegade took inspiration from the Army Jerry Cans on the back of old ******.

Is that what they are? I always thought the taillight was really a big Phillips head holding on the rear of the car.

I don't see how that's appropriate. That would be like Lexus tails lighting up as Rising Suns.

Why is that inappropriate? It's cheese ball but otherwise I don't see a problem.

No more cheese ball than side mirror housings with the Union Jack or a Union Jack painted on the roof.

As an Anglophile I think that is very cool!

Another car with cool tail lights was the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. They look like atoms!!

Somehow that is different than Mini putting a giant Union Jack decal on the roof of the car?

I guess you have to be a Brit to appreciate the Mini with Union Jack.

The next logical step in the evolution would seem to be Union Jacks in the rear taillight lenses.

It is! Two long Phillips head screws, one on each side of the car, hold the whole thing together! Talk about easy assembly.

Considering it's a German vehicle underneath, it is an attempt to get some patriotic spirit going among fans of the Mini's distant roots. But boy, imagine if an American manufacturer plastered the Stars and Stripes on the roof of a, say Dodge Challenger or a Chevy Camaro. Or if the Germans actually plastered the tri-color on the roof of a M3. Cheesy bit of marketing.
