Default Dallara Stradale

IndyCar developer Dallara has finally revealed its first ever road car. It's called the Stradale, which is fitting, considering "stradale" is Italian for "road." It's a lovely, curvy, and extraordinarily lightweight little car.

It's also available in a number of configurations. For the car's reveal, Dallara showed the absolute basic machine, a roadster without a windshield and without doors. If that's too rough, a windshield is available. A T-bar and rear cowl are also available, and to that can be bolted gull-wing doors. We've seen this roof and door configuration in spy shots, and the overall effect does make the car look a little more tall and less exciting. But the resulting bubble of a cockpit is interesting in its own right, and it's sure to provide excellent visibility for occupants.

The car, aside from looking sexy and swoopy, should offer astounding performance. It's made from carbon fiber and other composites, and weighs just under 1,900 pounds. Powering it is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder that Dallara's press release says is supercharged. Its output is 400 horsepower. Those ponies can be channeled through either the standard six-speed manual transmission, or through an optional sequential transmission.

To help keep things under control, Dallara worked to give it plenty of downforce, and even offers an optional rear wing, something we also saw in spy shots. The company claims the car can produce just over 1,800 pounds of downforce at the car's top speed, though it didn't reveal what that top speed is. Dallara also provides an extra safety net in the form of standard stability control.

Dallara also says it's already starting to deliver cars. The company didn't announce how much a Stradale will cost, though.
