Actually, on the subject of Mercedes and LS400, I remember, when the LS400 first debuted, there were a lot of complaints that, style-wise, it was a Mercedes-clone. No one, though, can deny that, in several ways, it beat M-B at its own game....offering a reliable, refined, luxury sedan at a relatively affordable price. The first LS400's started at roughly $35,000.

Its kind of hilarious, the first gen LS400. It was in just about every way a superior car to the W126 S-class and it cost half as much. That being said, the W126 was an awesome car in its own right, but by 1990 it had been out for 10 years. It sure as hell was a lot better in the 80's than the junk Cadillac and Lincoln were selling, Benz's main competition at the time. Of course the W126 was also twice as expensive as a Lincoln or Cadillac, so it should have been way nicer. Lexus kind of turned that whole notion on its ear though with the 1990 LS400, here was a car that was nicer than a top of the line Benz for Cadillac/Lincoln money.

I still feel the 1st Gen LS is a great looking car. It's aged petty well... I find it interesting that the instrument cluster really went unchanged in the LS from 1990 all the way through 2006, and really only changed slightly for the 4th Gen cars.
When the engineers hit the right formula, they stayed with it.
