In early 2017, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante stole the production-car Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record away from the Porsche 918 Spyder. Now, a few months later, Porsche's stolen it back in a big way.
The brand new Porsche 911 GT2 RS recorded a Nordschleife lap time of 6:47.03, besting the Huracan Performante by nearly 5 seconds, or about the same margin of victory the Lambo had over the previous record holder, the Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar.
The GT2 RS barely even had to try. With two very talented Porsche test drivers behind the wheel, the GT2 RS broke the Huracan Performante's record on the first try, but Porsche kept going until it hit that lap time of 6:47.03. The GT2 RS wore Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tires during its runs.
Porsche's most powerful 911 to date, putting out 700 horsepower, is now the fastest road-legal car with an official Nürburgring lap time. It also built the Radical SR8 LM, a purpose-built track car sold in incredibly limited quantities. It lags behind only two cars, according to Wikipedia -- the NIO EP9 electric car (6:45.90), and the track-only McLaren P1 LM (6:43.22). It's an incredible achievement, and one that Lamborghini will have a hard time topping.

The GT2 version of the 911 took a while but looks to be worth it, I had made a thread earlier asking about rumors of a GT2/GT2 RS. Wonder if they will do a 911 GT1 for this model.

IMO what makes this crazy is that they pulled this time in a rear engined car, a car that was down a good 200hp from the 918 with its better mid engined weight distribution. Really I think most of this boils down to tire technology. I still think if you bolted racing slicks to the 918 it would turn a better lap time than the 911 GT2 with racing slicks.
I still think Mr Koenigsegg makes a faster road car around the ring than the GT2. The main problem I have with the Nurburgring lap times is that it is very hard to get a test day with perfect weather conditions. Its such a huge/long/dangerous track as well, that the driver plays a lot larger variable than the car itself. I bet you a $20 bill that 48 year old Sabine Schmitz is faster around the Nurburgring than Lewis Hamilton in a road legal car.

Of course the GT2 RS is going to be faster than the 918 around the Nurburgring. The GT2 RS is essentially a street legal race car on semi-slicks. The cars themselves also play a large part besides tire technology. The GT2 RS weighs about 3,200 lbs. with 700 hp versus the 918's weight of about 3,800 lbs. and 887 hp. The GT2 RS obviously has the better power to weight ratio. No surprises here.
