Woodcliff Lake, NJ – September 1, 2017… Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 7.7 percent in August for a total of 23,553 compared to 25,531 vehicles sold in August 2016. Year-to-date, the BMW brand is down 5 percent in the U.S. on sales of 194,604 vehicles compared to 204,744 sold in the 1st 8 months of 2016.

Notable vehicle sales in August include the BMW 4 Series and BMW 5 Series, which both showed strong gains for the 2nd straight month, and the BMW X1. “Even as we are reporting the August sales, our thoughts are with those in the devastated areas of Texas and Louisiana, especially our many employees and colleagues. We are making significant contributions to the American Red Cross to relieve as much of the suffering as possible,” said Bernhard Kuhnt, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “August numbers were a bit unusual in that sedans outpaced our SAV’s as model year change over for the X5 and new model production of the X3 significantly restricted availability of our especially popular SAV models. This of course will improve as production ramps up.”

For August, MINI USA reported 4,448 vehicles sold, a decrease of 10.5 percent from the 4,969 sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA reported a total of 31,051 vehicles sold, a decrease of 11.0 percent from 34,887 vehicles sold in the first eight months of 2016.

BMW Group Electrified Vehicle Sales
Sales of BMW Group electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles increased 9.2 percent to 11,672 through August 2017, accounting for 5.2 percent of total BMW brand sales in the U.S. Currently, BMW offers 6 electrified vehicle models in the U.S., including the BMW i3 and BMW i8, as well as the BMW i Performance models: BMW 330e, BMW 530e, BMW 740e and the BMW X5 xDrive 40e. Mercedes Comes Up Short In August - Sales Down 10.7% For The Month

Agent009 submitted on 9/1/2017Auto Spies Photos Timestamp: 4:12:12 PM

2 user comments Views : 758 Category: New Cars Source: www.autospies.comMercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) today reported August sales of 25,373 units, compared to 28,404 vehicles sold during the same month last year.

On a year-to-date basis, Mercedes-Benz retails totaled 213,242 units, down 2.9% from the previous year. Mercedes-Benz Vans reported best-ever August sales with 3,581 units and smart reported 229 units, bringing the MBUSA grand total to 29,183 vehicles for the month.

“It became apparent during the previous months, that the highly volatile U.S. automotive market is affecting the sales figures of Mercedes-Benz. Nevertheless, we see an ongoing demand for our SUV lineup. The limited availability of several models impacted our monthly totals in August,” said Dietmar Exler, president and CEO of MBUSA. “Presently, our thoughts and concerns lie with our dealer partners, employees and their families in Texas, who are experiencing many challenges at the moment.”

Mercedes-Benz volume leaders in August included the C-Class, GLC and GLE model lines. The C-Class took the lead at 5,304, followed by GLC sales of 4,498. The GLE rounded out the top 3 with 3,750 units sold.

Mercedes-AMG high-performance models sold 1,993 units in August, with a total 21,121 sold year-to-date (up 49.5%).

Separately, Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) models recorded sales of 10,105 vehicles in August, a decrease of 14.2% when compared to the same month last year (11,773). On a year-to-date basis, MBCPO sold 78,952 vehicles, a decrease of 4.5% over 2016 (82,636).

There is higher demand for the new NSX in the UK, they are increasing shipments due to already selling out of their current stock.

One of the vloggers/influencers, Salomondrin recently said that a lot of Euro cars are stuck at ports because EPA is holding them up until they get all the smog, etc testing done (which may not be straightforward) in the wake of the diesel gate stuff.

I talked to my local dealer about an NSX when the first inventory cars started to appear and the experience was dreadful. The sales guy had absolutely no idea about the car, I got a bunch of generic marketing emails with missing data and empty fields where my info was meant to be, very generic phone follow up and a generally lackluster customer experience. It would have been a mediocre sales experience if I were discussing the purchase of a new MDX...

Unhappy Japan

I know that the sedan market is down overall but Japan is consistently now the bottom 3 in the mid-level luxury sedan segment. Granted, there is stiff competition from new vehicles like the G80 & even the FWD Continental & S90 but hopefully they have something competitive in the works:

Eclass 3,710 -26.8%
5series 3,587 +37.8%
XTS 1,712 -24.4%
G80 1,484
A6 1,380 -29.6%
CTS 1,200 -15.8%
S90 918 +373.2%
Continental 816
GS 689 -46%
Q70 400 -8.9%
RLX 110 -10.2%; hybrid 13 -34.1%

i still think the failure of GS is because of ES -- dealerships / salespeople simply has ZERO incentives to push the GS when the ES is bigger, softer, and cheaper. if we factor in that then lexus on mid-size sedan is doing very well.

still, very sad for the GS i agree

August 2017 Dashboardby Jeff Cobb September 5, 2017

The HybridCars.com monthly sales Dashboard is a collaboration of HybridCars.com and Baum & Associates, a Michigan-based market research firm focusing on automotive issues including the hybrid and electric vehicle market.

Overall sales for August were down from a year ago although they were up from July.

Clearly, sales this the year overall are down from a year ago as well, and this trend is likely to continue as the decline for 2017 is currently at 2.8 percent. Each of the non-conventional powertrain categories was up from July, and all were up from August 2016 except diesels. Year-to-date, all categories were up except for diesels.
About Top Photo: Chevy Bolt was best-seller; also makes a groovy autocrosser!
Sales for full electric vehicles were up from July and as compared to last August. Of course, year-to-date sales are up significantly based primarily on new entries. We estimate an additional 70 Tesla Model 3s were sold in August as production ramps up slowly. We believe that Model S and X sales were up from July, but Model S sales were down from year-ago. The Bolt actually led the category (and enjoyed its best month yet) as vehicles are now available throughout the U.S. (although often by order only). However, the increase from July was relatively modest and sales remain around 2,000 per month. The Leaf had another poor month, but the new version will be shown in early September, and be available for sale early in 2018. Sales of the current model will remain modest as buyers wait for the increased range and improved styling of the new model. Plug-in hybrids were up from July, last August, and year-to-date. The Prius Prime and the Volt led the category, with the Ford Fusion and C-Max following. Volumes of the Pacifica are still estimated and we believe that the quality issues have been solved and therefore sales are increasing, albeit at a modest rate. Volumes of the Volt have been declining since they peaked in March of this year. Year-to-date, they are down modestly from last year’s total. Sales increased in the second half of the last year (since the model was new), so the decline in sales for this year is likely to increase as the year continues. The Prius Prime has reached a steady rate of between 1,600-1,900 monthly and of course is up from last year since it has only been available since November 2016. The Volvo XC60 is new to the Dashboard this month, although sales began in July (and those sales are now included). It joins the larger Volvo XC90 which has been available for two years.

Hybrid sales were up from July, last August and year-to-date, with the Prius Liftback still leading the category. That said, the vehicle remains well below previous years. The Toyota RAV4 had another good month, as did the Fusion hybrid. A new entry has been added to the category, namely the GMC Sierra mild hybrid. This vehicle is only available in California on two wheel drive models and is an experiment to see if demand for this vehicle justifies continued and/or expanded production. Of course, four wheel drive is very popular on full size pickups, thus this will limit the volume of this product. The vehicle uses the eAssist technology which is used on a variety of other GM vehicles including the Malibu. Volumes in August were over 3,000 with a total of 3,300 year-to-date. Sales of this model are likely to be somewhat erratic, particularly given that plants producing this vehicle will be down for several weeks this fall for preparation of a new model (including gasoline engine versions) that will appear late in 2018. The Kia Niro and Honda Accord hybrid also had strong sales above 2,000 each in August. Toyota’s hybrid share in August is just over 50 percent as other automakers experienced relatively good sales last month as compared to Toyota.

The diesel segment had a good month (following a poor July) based on two important factors: 1) Ford Transit sales returned to “normal” and the vehicle leads the category by a large margin and 2) Ram Pickups are now being sold (albeit in small numbers in August) with the EcoDiesel engine. This engine has been off the market since early this year because of a lack of certification from EPA. That certification is now in place and sales volumes will rise in coming months as more production becomes available. In addition, a new vehicle has been added, namely the Range Rover Velar.

These numbers are laughable when you compare them to the 3/4 series sales for the month.

I compare the IS and Q50 more about an ongoing point that Infiniti is working their way up.

No question about what BMW has accomplished in the segment.

BMW has also shown remarkable restraint regarding not going into the supercar market and instead, building out segments in the car and pick the first letter UV market.

At my Lexus dealership they only had maybe 1 GS or it might have been zero on the lot last time I went while there were dozens of ES's, there were even more LS's then the maybe 1 GS there.

I don't think they have any real demand for them so they don't bother stocking them. I hardly ever see 4th Gen GS's on the road. The premium for the GS is just too high over the ES when they are so similar in size, features, looks, etc.

I have no interest in a ES and am looking for a 4th Gen GS but I can see why most buyers end up going with the ES.
