Mazda introducing breakthrough 'sparkless' gasoline engine in 2019

Published August 09, 2017

Current Mazda3 engine (Mazda)

Mazda is getting rid of the spark plug. At least some of the time.

The automaker has announced the development of a breakthrough engine technology it plans to introduce in 2019.

Known as Spark Controlled Compression Ignition, it is Mazda’s version of a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine, which can burn gasoline without a sparkplug, the way a diesel motor does.

This increases fuel efficiency of gasoline engines, but has been difficult to engineer for consumer use. A spark is still needed to ignite the fuel at certain RPMs, and juggling the two combustion methods is a complicated puzzle that Mazda claims it has solved.

Mazda will be the first automaker to put the technology into production and predicts that it will improve fuel economy by 20-30 percent. The lean-burning engines will also be supercharged and deliver efficiency on par with similarly-sized diesel engines, the company says.

Mazda did not confirm which model would debut the new engine, which will be marketed under the Skyactiv-X name, but it is expected to first show up in a redesigned Mazda3 compact.

Supercharged too eh?! Excited to see this come to fruition. MX-5 with HCCI engine sounds like fun.

Kudos to Mazda, if this really works then it really is a major breakthrough.

I wonder how this works. Thats why the spark plug exists right, to "spark" the detonation and get the whole cycle going?

perhaps each cylinder will fire (spark) only when necessary, so maybe 2 of 4 will spark when decelerating or on part throttle - that would save gas.

i was considering buying a mazda, but I guess I'll wait for the 20% mpg improvement. 35mpg >>>42mpg

Interesting post, bit.

Without a spark to set the air-fuel mixture off, and the fact that a gas/air mixture is much more volatile than with diesel fuel, it will obviously require some very precise engineering, without spark-plug use, to get the compression to set the mixture in the cylinders off at just the right point to avoid harmful knocking/pinging (which can damage the pistons and valves over time), or to waste power and fuel by setting the explosion off too late. And it has to be done right the first time, without room for error.....if it isn't, there could be a lot of damaged or replaced engines in warranty-work.

Mazda really deserves a lot of respect. I guess this engine partially comes from Mazda's efforts on Skyactiv diesel, which is supposed to come next year and will supposedly meet US emission requirements without having SCR system and without cheating like VW.

Not much sense in speculating on how Mazda was able to make sparkless engine possible. Engineers all over the world have been trying to achieve the same thing without much success. Certainly it took a lot of clever engineering and we'll just have to see until Mazda releases it to find out exactly how it works.
