Highly doubt those 86 owners will graduate straight to a Supra. As people age, their lives and priorities change. What was once fun to have will become burdensome or even tiring. And as they have higher income, their tastes will change. I dont know how everyone else is, but as I got older, comfort, convenience, value, family, kids and etc became more of a priority. Expensive 2 doors are waaay down on the list and far off in the future and even then I'm thinking about a use LC500 in 10 yrs.
Plenty of folks that have useless cars collecting dust in their garage.
I have 2 already and take subway to work unfortunately most days.
My brother got a new 911 last year which sits in his garage 90% of the time.
For most ppl cars like BRZ, Miata, 911, Z4, Corvette are 2nd 3rd 4th cars.
I just wish i had more garage space and more time off work lol.

Supras were always pricey cars. From 1978 to 1992, they had some eye watering msrp stickers. Yet people bought them in large numbers. What always sold the Supra was its sophistication: engine, chassis, comfort and fit/finish/reliability. But, this one will do better at $50K tops.

eg. 1 1979 - 1989. A car that became more and more sophisticated and changed, but still sold in very good numbers considering how pricey it was. 33K in 1986 is not large numbers?

Sad. Even with this lively discussion, and the Car and Driver I got in the mail today with the Supra on the cover, I honestly couldn't care less about this car.
I loved the last one, though.

The Supra's chief engineer said the Cayman is the benchmark for this Supra, meaning that Toyota was not going for a GT/Super car - as the last Supra is described by fans. So basically you get a Cayman competitor that in its premium version tops out where the Cayman starts. It's no coincidence that the Porsche starts at $56K while the Toyota ends at $55K. That comparison aside, there is also no denying that this is a Supra with the Z4's heart and soul.
How's a Toyota dealership going to hype this car? Will the salesperson say, "oh this is a Bimmer under the skin, It's a Z4 with all the good stuff that makes BMWs fun to drive." Or will they say, "it's our answer to the Cayman, but you won't spend $65-70K to get a proper sports car.
Toyota's pricing is going to be an interesting experiment. The base Corvette runs 425hp and it starts in the mid-50s, although it's a different demographic of buyers. Corvette has beome an old rich man's car. Are the Cayman and the Supra even going to be cross-shopped. Luxury brand vs a mass market company's sports car?
The Supra should get really good driving reviews because of course, it's got all the things that make BMWs praiseworthy. How it sells at $55K over the long run will be a big question mark.

The point I made was that it is just as reliable as a Corolla engine, really says something. Yes, it took 10 years to develop, but think about how the Europeans have been building the exotic engines for decades while Lexus was new to this. They have far more experience and knowledge in this area, yet Lexus comes out and builds something that even after 40,000 - 50,000 miles of hard track miles, shows no abnormalities.
BTW, B58 engine breakdown by EE

Most likely the Z32 300ZX/300ZXtt came out and took most of the sales, it came out in 89 and handily outperformed the Supra at the time. New/updated Vette, 911, 944, 928 might have come out too around the same time to take sales. 3rd Gen RX7 came out in 92 as a 93 which would have possibly taken sales.

I laughed so hard when my wife texted me a pic of a giant rat at the fire house two towns over (construction). These 3 guys in polo shirts and slacks, looking like they were dressed for golf were blocking the entrance, and had a Acura MDX. I checked on this one--it's generally not respectable to drive a foreign car to the union hall, and an unspoken rule that it is not to be parked on the lot. Doesn't matter if assembled in OH or KY etc.
