Default Fiat's Miata-Based Roadster Will Be Called 124 Spider

Confirmed: Fiat's Miata-Based Roadster Will Be Called 124 Spider

(Photoshopped. )

Mazda and Fiat have been cooking up a new roadster based on the 2016 Miata platform for a while now. First it was supposed to be an Alfa Romeo, then it was punted over to Fiat after Alfa decided to make their own roadster. (Apparently Mazda wasn't Italian enough for them.) But now we have an official name for the Fiat roadster: the 124 Spider.

Marchionne declined to say whether the 124 Spider would wear a Fiat badge or an Abarth badge, but Auto Express says they expect both. I'd be kind of surprised if it was sold as a standalone Abarth model.

It's exciting news, but also something we kind of expected to happen after Fiat filed trademarks with the U.S. Patent Office for the names. It's a renewal of an historic nameplate for Fiat that dates back tot he 1960s. The design is expected to be more retro than the Miata, and the new 124 may also spawn a coupe version.

Auto Express also expects the 124 will dump the Mazda SkyActiv engines for some Fiat/Alfa Romeo MultiAir turbo motors, possibly with up to 200 horsepower.

Hopefully a 124 Coupé also, as Mazda doesn't want to build it.

Looks good in the pictures, even if it isn't all that different from the Miata. Wonder if it will fall apart like every other Fiat ever though. I'm betting that all depends on if its made in the same factory as the Miata.

Other than the rumor-within-a-rumor about a possible coupe version is there anything going on here other than some badge engineering?

Yes, there is.....if you consider the fact that they are using different engines. The Miata gets a Mazda-sourced Skyactiv power plant; the Fiat an Italian-sourced MultiAir.

The front overhang ruins the proportion, Miata looks much better.

Trust me, Exterior is completely different except the windshield frame and soft top. Rear end received a very angular and squared design compare to round and curvy in ND.

Interior is pretty much the same except color trim. Top part of the door panel is black (soft touch rubber?) instead of exterior color paint. Seat is different, at least for Abarth model.

The front overhang is longer because of pointy and enlonged nose (more room for intercooler?).
