Next generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class spied for the first time with its own body

The next generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been spied for the first time featuring its own body.
Work is well underway on the next-gen E-Class (W213) which we now can see with its proprietary body rather than as a C-Class test mule as depicted in several spy photos we published late June. There's not much to talk about in terms of design as the prototype was heavily camouflaged and looked like a bigger C-Class. Based on what we see in these shots, the E-Class features a slightly longer wheelbase than today's model so expect a more spacious interior.
It will ride on the same MRA platform as its smaller brother so the new E-Class is bound to lose some weight. It is believed Mercedes-Benz will have five versions of the model: standard sedan, long wheelbase sedan, estate, coupe and convertible. Overall, the styling is said to become sportier while the two-door versions will be bigger and more luxurious compared to the current models.
A new family of straight-six gasoline engines will reportedly be offered with displacements ranging from 2.2 to 3.5 liters. The E63 AMG will likely make a comeback with the newly developed V8 4.0-liter twin-turbo sourced from the AMG GT and the upcoming C63 AMG. Already available on the current E350 BlueTEC, the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission will be offered in the W213 generation E-Class.
According to a report issued earlier this year, the all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is programmed to go on sale in Germany in March 2016 so chances are it will unveiled towards the end of 2015.

That's because automakers like to play games with bras, body-tape, and black-out gear. What they've done, in this case, is disguise it to look more or less like an old Chevy Monte Carlo....except with four doors.

Those rims are probably for the efficiency models for the lowest drag.
The E class should really have its own headlight design like in the past. I know they got rid of the 4 separate headlights but created the illusion with the LED strips, but they are part of an optional headlight upgrade package.

Wheelbase to be extended
The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W213) is making a comeback in a fresh batch of spy images.
Several months ago we saw the next-gen E-Class wearing the new C-Class' body and now for the second time this week we check out the W213 generation carrying its own body. Heavily influenced by its C- and S-Class brothers, the new E will ride on the same MRA platform as the C and is bound to grow in size judging by the stretched wheelbase.
Despite getting bigger, the new E-Class will lose some weight as a result of switching to the new architecture and will reportedly get a family of straight-six gasoline engines that will range from 2.2 to 3.5 liters. The recently announced twin-turbo V8 4.0-liter engine which premiered in the AMG GT is a candidate to power the next E63 AMG.
Rumors are suggesting the E-Class W213 will go on sale at home in Germany in March 2016 which means an official reveal will occur several months earlier, possibly before the end of next year. As a reminder, the current generation E-Class was introduced early 2009 and received a massive facelift towards the end of 2012.

Well, that took bloody forever. I have no idea what took them so long. The W212 was designed through 2005 and design frozen in the first half of 2006, when the facelift W211 debuted. It was first caught as a prototype in January 2007, leaked in August 2008 (via AutoBild), and launched in March 2009. Design of that began in 2004 (dev. from '03), following completion of the W211 facelift planned for mid-2006.
W213 design according to someone I know (Al-Attar), began in 2011, just after the W212 mega-facelift was frozen and being finished for a 2013 launch. One of his sketches from July of that year, made the rounds recently (he now works at BMW). The W213 in January 2013, was involved in Los Angeles customer marketing clinics as the "2017 E350" with classic/luxury and sport grille variants.
It was amongst the 2013 Lexus GS350, 2013 BMW 535i, and 2013 Audi A6. Why the hell has it taken 20 months from that design stage until now, with only 16 months left until start of production in January 2016? Only the low-end, FWD models were spotted less 18 months ahead of production, so why is a core model having such short road-testing?
By comparison, the W222 and W205 took a long time, respectively (W222: December 2010-May 2013; W205: January 2012-December 2013). Is the W213 like the W210 of 1995, a result of significantly reduced development time at MB? I figure that Daimler might be making previous mistakes Toyota made in relying solely on rapid, virtual development. Likely not the case here.

I do think development time has sped up simply because of the MRA platform...but I may be overthinking it.

In unrelated Mercedes thread, I mentioned that, despite the visibility benefits of the "floating" screen, the E-class was likely going to align itself more with the S-class in terms of interior design. Looks like the insiders I get my info from were right.
