Why would anyone want a guy who "doesn't care" to give a speech to impressionable young minds? Keep him in jail and throw away the key.

Well, prison can have the effect of humbling people after a while of realizing you're institutionalized. With that realization may come some inner peace and honesty, not right now though as I'm sure there's allot of anger still to subside. I'm not saying to let him out of jail. But he can do some community service and return to his jail cell, if applicable.

My thought about this is, him standing up in his prison orange overalls giving some advice/speech to some young new drivers of the importance of safe driving; the importance that road rage do not belong on the public roads and needs to be curtailed and the respect for every human life. There are no second chances or do-overs with a life and such a visual can be indelible to get one's attention letting them know if you disobey any of these laws, that you are not above the law and your freedom can be taken away from you, as it has for me. When (or if) he calms down, who knows, he could actually speak from the heart and really grasp his audience's attention and bring home his point.

A bit more generalized from this actual topic, I see the gamut of distracted drivers from teenagers (new drivers); adults; parents in minivans (and SUVs) with kids (who follow what their parents do, thinking they can safely drive and use their mobile phone also); contractors in different levels of heavy vehicles driving on the phone and writing with clipboard and pen; Taxis (Uber types included) all deeply distracted with their mobile phone while driving on busy streets and highways. While their head is down their vehicle is still moving at that speed and they've lost their reaction ability for safety. It's really Russian Roulette with other people life's, for what, a Tweet; Instagram update; Facebook update or email response. How does that equate value for someone's life; their life; their vehicle and insurance?
Think about it, for the most part, many of us have become so comfortable with driving while being distracted with their mobile that we don't even know what focused driving is anymore.

Heck, even on this very forum, where I think? (don't know the actual statistics) the demographics are a bit more mature and educated, many times I've read of some type of road rage; vindictive actions which makes me think of some residual invincibility complexes yet to fully mature.

In summary, in the heat of the moment we (all) sometimes lose our cool and do crazy things and unfortunately some are regrettable for life, as appears to be the case for this offender. If this is indeed the case (though he's not new to controversy), in general, let a little good prevail out of a negative split-second lapse in judgement situation.

My post is not meant to offend anyone, any group or any segment it's about getting the message out to reach those whose life is encapsulated within their mobile phones (you know, the Matrix ). This may just be a story that's read or glanced over on their mobile devices but seeing someone shackled in a jump-suit escorted by an armed sheriff, does get one's attention. Maybe after one such community session a teenager can say to their parents, "Mom, Dad, maybe you should put the phone down when we're driving for everyone's sake." How embarrassed but impressed would a parent be to hear that! [Heck, even my 3-yr old daughter has learned -from us- that we take our shoes off and do not walk onto the rugs with them and says to me (in the cutest voice that breaks my heart), "Daddy, shoes off. Daddy, no shoes upstairs!" Or someone can take it upon themselves to say, "Maybe that update can wait until I'm parked, it's not worth the risk." Or if cutoff or being overtaken one says to them self, "Okay, self, take a deep breath, let it go, let it go. Not worth it"

Such win. For all!

@RX469

I see your point and the positive light you're trying to shed on this event, but to play devils advocate, in this case the old adage "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" (or a new state of mind) seems to apply. Perhaps prison could change him sure, but perhaps not. And if that is the case, I know I wouldn't want that guy speaking at my daughters school.
