Default Toyota Land Cruiser says bye-bye to the UK

Well, I never thought it would happen, but the LC V8 is no more in the UK for the 2016 update.

Sad to see, but it looks like there are much superior alternatives.

Well, consider that the U.K. is home turf for the Range Rover, the LC's closest rival. Naturally the RR is going to have somewhat of an advantage there. That doesn't mean, though, that the LC will flop in other countries....indeed, it does quite well in the Middle East and some other Third-World places.

Nothing unusual, it is entering 7th year of production and huge vehicle for Europe, but real reason is that they did not update V8 engine to Euro VI standard. While Land Cruiser 150 (Prado) got brand new diesel engine.

Nothing unusual? Toyota has had a Land Cruiser in the UK for how many years? If their competitors can do it there should be no reason why Toyota can't. My guess is the LC is gonna die off in most 1st world regions.

There isn't much reason to own such an antiquated behemoth in countries with developed infrastructure.

Toyota is very good at doing business so if and when it pulls a model it means that Toyota no longer finds it profitable to produce that specific model for import to the particular market. Unfortunately for the UK, it is different from the rest of Europe -- they drive on the wrong (left) side of the road -- so the vehicles that Toyota imports into the UK must sell in enough numbers to make it worthwhile to produce a right-hand drive model and then export from Japan into the UK.

We in Canada have much of a similar problem. Our tastes in vehicles is somewhat different from the huge market south of us -- we prefer smaller cars (or the options of the smaller engines in the larger cars), we like hatchbacks and I am willing to bet that we do not mind station wagons either, none of which is particularly appealing in the USA. But because our market is only one-tenth the size of the American market, we tend to get the models (with only trim differences) that our American cousins get, and not get the models that the Americans do not like.

its going to die off for sure in Europe until next generation comes out with Euro VI engine in 2 years likely. Until then, loss of model that sells in hundreds is not going to be noticed by the dealers. LC200 is way too big and way too expensive for Europe.

On the other hand, Prado sells well and just got all new engines released.

TMME needs to focus on new small SUV as well as new Verso coming out next year, LC200 is not focus of European Toyota arm.

this has nothing to do with UK specifically, just that we pick up European news from UK since they are in English.

LC200 is being discontinued in Europe due to its V8 diesel not meeting Euro VI emissions. Considering that LC200 V8 diesel sells very small numbers in Europe, I would guess that new engine will come only when new LC300 comes out.

Out of several series of diesels, only small 1.4l and 2.5l truck engine have been updated for EuroVI, while they added 1.6l and 2.0l from BMW that replaced 2.0l and 2.2l D4D's, as well as introduced all-new 2.4l and 2.8l diesel engine series for trucks. I would hazard to guess that new 1.4l and 2.0l equalents are coming with the launch of new Yaris and Verso (next year?), or at worst with new Auris and Rav4 2.5 years from now.

We dont know much details yet of upcoming powertrains, but they did update 14 engines in past
18 months, including some all new engines like 1.2l turbo petrol or 2.4/2.8l turbo diesels. Next development after new Prius would be larger turbo petrol (1.5l?) as well as smaller diesel for Yaris/CT200h/Verso which should all at least be shown by the end of next year.

Maybe we wont see 1.4l D4D replacement as soon as next year since they just updated this one with EuroVI, new turbo and new injectors with larger pressure. So quite possibly for next year we might see updated hybrid powertrain as well as 1.5l turbo for Europe, since 1.8l and 2.0l petrols for Europe got only tiny updates in past years. Maybe even 1.0l /1.2l turbo to replace anemic 1.33l in Yaris/Auris? Or just new version of 1.33l from Japan, with atkinson cylce since thats base/cheap engine anyway.

Future seems full of turbo's for Toyota's in any case.
