Default Ugly sells : Global Design Chief Tokuo Fukuichi explains the Lexus Grill

>>> Video found at Yahoo News Link

Lexus is looking for an edge and believes the answer may come on the front of the car rather than under the hood – the grill. Jane Lanhee Lee looks at the inspiration for the unusual design.

Now that the spindle has been applied to the entire Lexus line I can see that it is more successful on some models and less so on others. I'm not convinced that this is an enduring grille design in the way the BMW twin kidneys or Mercedes horizontal bars are. I see this as a trendy design statement that will be replaced in a few years.

With about 25 seconds left in the video you can see what appears to be the RC convertible.

Have they announced when that will be available?

The truth is, on the dealer's lot, the grille can be overwhelming, but when you see it on the road, the car stands out. BMWs, Audis, & Mercedes sort of blend together, but Lexus does not. And I think people like that sort of thing.

I agree, the LS has the best front end.

I'm starting to realize that I may be the only person who thinks that the spindle grill is not that big of a deal. It doesn't seem overly crazy or aggressive to me.

Probably not something I'd want on my own car, but one cannot argue with the man that it is indeed selling.

Seems like some people either love it or absolutely hate it, but the spindle grill just takes some time getting used to. I admit, didn't care too much for it at first, but it's growing on me.

I love the spindle grill.

And regarding the title, Ugly does indeed sell.

There are way too many Kia Souls on my street.

Let's label it distinctive, live Cindy Crawford's mole or Madonna's tooth gap...

considering that Lexus sales increased 40% since 2012, I dont think it is just you :-).

I think it is big improvement in every car it was introduced to... yes, some look better than others, but so do the cars from other brands too.

The funny thing about big grilles is that people get used to them. The gaping Nuvolari grille shown on Audi concept cars looked shocking at first but now the same thing on an A6 looks perfectly normal.

Lexus spindle grilles haven't really been full spindles except on the NX, on the other cars they look like a pair of mirrored trapezoids with a bumper in between. I'd say the recent ES refresh and the new RX have brought much-needed design consistency to the lineup, without having cookie-cutter designs like Audi and BMW.
