I remember my dad bought a Japan made rice cooker back in the 1980's and that rice cooker is to this day is still working.
Trust me, the Japanese products of the 1980s were NOT the Japanese products of the 1950s....especially with cars. You would probably rather walk than have to deal with a 50's vintage Toyopet or Datsun.

Cutting corners is a common issue in Chinese manufacturing and it's hard to trust even government regulations when palms are easily greased. I'd say people in China have more faith in the market and foreign products - a foreign company like BMW or Toyota isn't going to tarnish its global reputation by cutting corners in its local JV operations, whereas local carmakers have no such oversight.

And the funny thing about the frosty China-Japan relationship is that Nissans, Mazdas, Hondas and Toyotas are still being cranked out by the boatloads in local Chinese factories. I've also seen a lot more ESs and CTs on the road recently. People vote with their wallets
