Default Buick Avenir Concept

Buick surprised us on the eve of the 2015 Detroit Auto Show with a handsome new luxury sedan concept named Avenir, which is French for 'future'.

The full-size sedan was created by a global team of Buick designers and sculptors who were said to be inspired by historic Buick concepts such as the Riviera.

“Avenir embodies Buick design, which centers on effortless beauty and presence without pretense,” commented Ed Welburn, vice president of General Motors Global Design. “It demonstrates the growing international reach of Buick and offers an exciting vision of where it can go.”

One of the most interesting features of the study is a new grille design that combines the traditional waterfall blades with wing-shaped elements, while also marking the return to three-color – red, silver and blue – Buick tri-shield insignia. The face could very easily work for Opel too, if you're wondering.

“The new grille is a modern interpretation of a design introduced on the landmark 1954 Wildcat II concept, which shattered expectations of what a Buick was supposed to be,” said Michael Simcoe, vice president of design, GM International Operations. “On the Avenir, it represents a break from convention and progressiveness in technology.”

The Avenir stretches 204.5 inches (5,195 mm) in length and 76 inches (1,931 mm) in width, with power coming from a "next-generation" direct-injected V6 engine with Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) and stop/start technology, connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission driving all-four wheels.

We'll have more on the Buick concept on Monday from the Detroit Motor Show floors.

Default Buick Avenir concept unveiled, previews a possible flagship sedan [video]

Buick has officially unveiled their new Avenir concept.

Set to debut at the North American International Auto Show, the Avenir is a flagship sedan with a prominent waterfall grille that is flanked by LED headlights. Moving further back, we can see ventilated front fenders, curvaceous body work and a "boattail" rear end. The concept also has muscular rear fenders and 21-inch alloy wheels.

The knock-out styling continues in the cabin as drivers will find themselves surrounded by high quality materials including premium leather upholstery, silk and bamboo wood trim. The car also has ambient lighting, an ionic air filtration system, a wireless smartphone charger and an IntelliLink infotainment system with a 12-inch display.

Speaking of the latter, there's a driver recognition system which recognizes the driver and automatically loads their music preferences, calendar schedule and recently visited destinations.

Since the Avenir was designed to be a flagship, it comes loaded with high-end features including individual rear seats which are separated by a full-length center console. Rear seat passengers are also treated to a dual screen entertainment system which promises to let them relax and enjoy the journey.

Buick was coy on technical specifications but confirmed the model is powered by a "next-generation" V6 engine that has direct-injection, a start/stop system and cylinder deactivation technology. It is connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system.

Not surprisingly, it seems to be the same platform Cadillac is using for its own Elmiraj flagship concept....though the article doesn't state that.

Would do better as a Cadillac which from what I understand is not doing very well with their uncompetitive line up.

Truly beautiful. This would be a game changer for Buick... but potentially coming up too close on Cadillac.

I am liking the rear bucket seats. Nice change from most cars rear bench.

Agree. Looks great and luxurious. But GM needs to tread carefully here.

I'm surprised it's this radical. I'd have thought something more sedate albeit with current design language. I challenge them to produce such a vehicle

Not sure why GM has these brands like Buick or GMC - really waste of marketing dollars.

Concentrate on Chevy and Cadillac......

Buick is alive because the Chinese market took to Buick more than Cadillac, so it's really not a waste if that's their inroads into what is eventually the largest market in the world.

GMC exists because franchises couldn't survive on sales of Buick alone, and they needed some profitable truck revenue, and surprisingly little budget needed for higher margins on GMC products.

In any case i think the Avenir is a great concept for the brand, would love to see this come through to production in some shape or form. Or even just the design language trickle down to the next gen Lacrosse and Regal

Correct.....and the brand is also growing significantly here in the U.S. One reason why the Chinese Buick market is (still) larger than here is simply because Buick offers more models there....the Chinese public has more to choose from. Still, out of all of them, they seem to like the Excelle (Verano) the most....that's the Chinese top-seller.

Looks nice! Has a bit of the boat tail Riviera heritage designed into it.

Also, the Buick portholes have ventured into BMW 7 Series territory. The front seems a bit too sedate to fit with the rest of the car. Buick needs to get a big ol' grille like Lexus and Audi to distinguish themselves.

Great concept, like the rear "boattail" design or whatever it's called.

Would like to see rear hatch opened to see what storage there is. That huge rear console I'm guessing gets in the way of luggage or golf clubs!
