This is a cop out from Lexus/Toyota IMO, not a real LS. When the LS debuted back in 1990, it was measurably better in every way than the top of the line Benz, BMW, Audi, Cadillac or Lincoln, it was the standard of the world. Not to mention it undercut the Germans on price by a good margin.

This new car, where is the STANDARD TWIN TURBO V8??? That's been the standard engine for this class of cars for YEARS now. Yes I know there are diesel and smaller economy engines in the big German cars, but most people order them with a twin turbo V8 in the US. This really isn't a competitor at all for the BMW 7, S-class or Audi A8 at all. Its a cop out and will be playing 2nd fiddle with cars like the Lincoln Continental and Cadillac CT6.

That being said, it looks much more compelling than those offerings from Detroit, and I'm sure it will be priced SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the 110-120k an S-class goes for now days.

As for the styling, that is the one thing they NAILED IMO. It is a striking and pretty car, I love the bulging fenders and swept back roof. As for the interior, it looks really busy in photos and I hate the way they intergrated those rear video screens, they look really tacky IMO. I'm sure its really nice, but I can't decide if I like it or not, probably have to sit in it to figure that one out.

 

Ok all you who are bashing really need to stop, every reviewer is giving the car such great feedback and how it's on par with Germans if not better. Now I just feel you guys are bashing for the he'll of it.

 

No matter what Lexus did for the new LS not everyone would like it. People are entitled to their own views and opinion and that's all this is. I'm not buying one new so it makes no difference to me I'm just glad Toyota has made a Turbo 6 cylinder engine.

 

Yep, gotta respect everybody's opinions. Discuss their opinions with them, debate them, but don't just tell them they can't have them.

 

The 7-Series doesn't come with a standard V8 though. The 740i uses a rather pedestrian 3.0L I6 for 320hp and 332lbft. The LS will utilize a 3.5L FI V6 making 415hp 442lbft. Entry level engine for entry level engine that's a huge difference.

Not sure about TN, but here in CA there are a lot of 740i's.

 

Whenever I like a design and then read negative feedback on a forum like this, I just remind myself that my intent should not be to try to convince those who don't like it that they should or that they are somehow wrong. It's a futile effort that takes years off my life and does nothing to change their minds. I'm happier to just let it go.

Back to the car. I read that the touchpad interface is updated. Does anyone know what is different about it from what's in the NX and RC?

 

I hope they at the minimum added the support for swipe-based momentum scrolling/panning like we have grown so used to on smartphones and laptops.

 

In terms of power, that Lexus 3.5 TTV6 is pretty impressive. I believe the S550 TTV8 is what, 449 hp? For 2018, the S Class will also have a V6 for the standard engine. The S450 will be 362 hp.

 

You really need to stop taking this personally. Of course reviews are going to say that, no one's driven the damn thing yet. This will all settle out with time.

That is my precise point, the differentiator for Lexus is refinement, reliability and lower cost of ownership over the lifecycle of the car. If that is no longer true, than the Lexus is just like all the other cars you have mentioned. It's just like if Coke no longer tasted like Coke, what is the point of buying Coke?

Yes had a 1998 LS400. Now have the last generation GS460 and RX450H.

 

I think it's a great starting point. There's an opportunity here I'm sure to tune for more power or de-tune for other applications. A forum member brought up a good point that this TTV6 will likely be massaged into the GS and be named GS400 to put it on par with the 540i and E400/E43 AMG, since Lexus has officially given way to monikers not depicting displacement. The LS500 won't be the last.

 

What's up with the 'eyelashes'?

 

The B58 Inline 6 is a new engine and it definitely is not pedestrian.
The HP/Torque figures that BMW publishes for all their engines are significantly underrated which has been proven by independent dyno #s and test figures.

Also inline 6s have been proven to be the smoothest and most refined comparable to V8s.
MB will be switching to inline 6 turbo as well.

Also even though the 6cyl has been offered by BMW for several years and is cheaper, the V8 is still the popular choice for customers - this shows you that V8s are still important in this class as a form of luxury and prestige owners expect.

In NY the new 7 is everwhere, i have not seen one 740i yet.

 

Ohh man, I'm late to see the new LS, but here gone the last hope that I can get back to Lexus family, until they rid of current lineups.

It's is a nice car, but as a long time LS lover, this is not for me. I agree with a lot of members here, and don't wanna add any more comments,

All I can say is, as a potential buyer on flagship sedans, I won't look at the new LS.
