well, you are just guessing without any info. I am guessing looking at all the info they already released on updating 14 engines in 2015 with new technologies. it is same kind of update that RC-F got for instance.

So I am assuming that 3.5l GR will get same technology that new turbo and RC-F engine are getting - which means complete rework (they are calling them new engines), application of numerous new technologies to make them both more efficient and faster.

Basically they are combing tech from their hybrids and latest tech in engine world. Engines will run at Atkinson cycle during part load and Otto when you are stepping on it - this means 30% save of fuel when you are cruising, plus host of other technologies that they say will bring at least 10% better consumption. So far they released 2 of these new engines and they are 15%-30% better with more power to boot.

UR in RC-F got the same tech and also big update in hp. That looks the way they will go with GR series as well.

Now, they might bring some twin turbo engine, but it would be based on 3.5l as thats more efficient according to Toyota. And I doubt they will put 400hp engine into regular GS, so maybe they will make some special editions or something like that.

hmm just noticed that the Mazda CX-9 uses Ford's 3.7L V6 and I'd say it's pretty good.

 

And for a brief time the first model year iirc it used Ford's 3.5L V6. The 3.7 was needed to add a little extra grunt especially in the torque department.

 

^ and the Mazda6 v6 used the 3.0L Duratec, albeit with Mazda head.

 

The CX-9 is a big vehicle but it goes & handles really well. It's also very comfortable.

It's all about odds. Nobody knows anything you don't. (maybe they do, I don't know) The likelihood of Lexus dropping a twin turbo V6 into an IS is about as likely as Ford offering a V8 in a Fusion, which is to say, ain't gonna happen.

 

While at the same time a V8 couldn't fit even if Ford depended on it where as Lexus/Toyota developing a future V6 TT would certainly be more in line with reality.

 

I can think of one good reason why--I don't believe there is an 8-speed transaxle in existence. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think 100% of the 8/9 speed transmissions are attached to longitudinally-mounted engines and drive (at least) the rear wheels.

 

RX350 F Sport is an 8 speed.

Lexus and Aisin have an 8-speed automatic transaxle in the RX 350 F-Sport, claimed to be the world's first 8-speed FWD automatic transaxle.

ZF has a 9-speed FWD automatic transaxle, used by Chrysler in its new 200, new Jeep Cherokee, and rumoured to be supplied to Honda/Acura for their new TLX.
