Chrysler readying Hellcat V8 with Viper-like power

A monstrous supercharged V8 engine could be in store for Chrysler and SRT products, if recent rumors are to be believed. Allpar is reporting that the forced-induction V8 – Chrysler's first, if this goes down – could make its debut this summer.

The story goes that the Hellcat would be based on a 6.2-liter Hemi engine, rather than on the existing 5.7- or 6.4-liter versions of the company's vaunted mill. In any case, the general consensus is that the motor will have gobs of power. Modest estimates call for between 500 to 570 horsepower, with some outliers predicting a figure as high as 600 hp. That figure would put the output would place the Hellcat awfully close to that of the 640-hp V10 in the SRT Viper, too. Allpar contends that a slightly lower powered version would allow Chrysler to keep costs below that of the more powerful Ford Shelby GT500, which might be a sweet spot.

The Hellcat could debut in a number of SRT products. SRT versions of the Charger, Challenger and 300 are all up for grabs, as is the rumored SRT Barracuda.

Ok, let me get this Right. Shelby GT500 is 60k car. If this Hell Cat is cheaper, say 50k. It will sell like a hot CAKE!

a 6.2L Hemi V8 "Hellcat" is genius. The 6.4L Hemi V8 in the current SRT8's only puts out 475hp. The proposed 500-575hp is great.

Definitely like the direction Chrysler is taking under Fiat. Diamler-Benz couldn't do this why?

Sounds cool to me, but can they make them reliable?

I don't think there's been any issues with the Hemi engines (which are tried and true), rather the assembly of the car itself. But even that has been improved

Great job Chrysler! American car companies are really stepping up their game now. I really like what I'm seeing.

So essentially a match for GM's LSA.

But in a few more cars than what GM has done with their engine.

My brother has an 08 300C AWD, no issues other then the crappy dealerships, and his buddy has a 08 300 with the 3.5L V6, which he neglects the crap out of and has ran the car with no oil in the engine from time to time, car has no issues for the daily beating it takes, I would say a very big improvement over the previous generation Chryslers

The Viper is the only vehicle that is even remotely appealing from Fiat.

D-B transplanted a lot of technology into Chrysler products initially, but supposedly saw the handwriting on the wall. They were engineering their way into a low-cost Mercedes alternative. Cars like the late Crossfire were coming close to the SLK in engineering and quality, but selling at a far lower price that undercut the SLK by $17,000 here in the US. The sales picture showed Mercedes selling 957 SLKs while Chrysler sold 3006 Crossfires in 2005. According to Forbes at the time (2005) the bargain-priced Crossfire was a better deal. This, coupled with the lagging US sales of the SLK engendered a re-style that brought the little Mercedes roadster on par with sales of the MoPar product by the following year, roughly 3000 units each.

At that point, concerned about creating a second-line car company across the board, and concerned that their own competition caused a premature restyle of the SLK, many automotive pundits believe D-B backed away from the relationship with Chrysler.

Chrysler's hot Hellcat puts pressure on the Viper
http://www.autonews.com/article/2014...e-on-the-viper
It's been an open secret for nearly a year that Chrysler has been tinkering with a supercharged V-8 code-named Hellcat.

Automotive News reported the 6.2-liter Hellcat's existence in May 2013, when we said that it would rival the power of the larger V-10 in the SRT Viper and would debut in the next-generation Dodge Challenger. But in the April issue of Hot Rod magazine, SRT brand boss Ralph Gilles described a debate raging inside Chrysler.

Said Gilles: "We have a situation where, you know -- we may have a situation -- where the flagship car is not the most powerful car in our arsenal ... how do we explain that to ourselves? So we have an internal horsepower race as well as an external one."

That flagship car, the Viper, has a naturally aspirated engine with a 660-hp rating.

So how powerful might the Hellcat be?

If the SRT Challenger is to climb back into a horsepower fight with the lighter Ford Mustang GT500 and the 580-hp Chevy Camaro ZL1, it's reasonable to assume it would need a much more powerful V-8 -- perhaps one with a three-digit horsepower rating that starts with a 7.

For perspective, in terms of power, that's V-12 Lamborghini Aventador territory.

The Hellcat is slated for near 700hp?! holy, Chrysler is finally serious again. I like it .

Part of the reason the Viper though is still corked up (let's face it 8.4L V10 with only 660hp.. right), is because of Chrysler and SRT's new sugar daddy Fiat and their pedigree exotic brand Ferrari and the F12 Belinetta.

Exactly. This is sad. Viper sales are tanking because the price for its performance. No standard carbon brakes, shoddy pirelli tires not michelins, 120k+ for 650hp... all the while issues with build quality and materials. Vette stealing its thunder with the Z06 for less money aint helping either.
