Default Next Gen Cayman & Boxster to use turbo flat four engine

Porsche boss Matthias Müller has confirmed long-running rumours suggesting future incarnations of the Boxster and Cayman are in line to receive a turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine.

In an interview with Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport magazine, 60-year-old Müller said Porsche road cars would follow the lead of the company’s hi-tech 919 Hybrid race car in receiving four-cylinder engines.

But while the 919 Hybrid runs a unique vee-configured engine, the unit being readied for the Boxster and Cayman will follow the lead of Porsche’s classic six-cylinder engine with a 180deg horizontally opposed layout as part of a modular engine strategy.

“We will continue with the downsizing strategy and develop a new four-cylinder boxer engine which will see service in the next-generation Boxster and Cayman,” said Müller. “We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2.”

When queried on the output of the new four-cylinder boxer engine, Müller suggested it would boast “up to 400ps [395bhp]”.

Today’s naturally aspirated 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine develop up to 325bhp and 335bhp respectively in the new range-topping Boxster and Cayman GTS models, which were revealed earlier this week.

I wonder if they'll make a noise similar to the WRX/STi

They just came out with the Boxster GTS and Cayman GTS so let's hope they continue a few more years with the flat 6. But it does seem like a likely move by Porsche in the future to give them flat fours albeit with a little FI

I cringe at the thought of a 4 cylinder 911, that is where it is heading though with these ridiculous CAFE regulations.

I think the 911 is safe for the time being, as long as they have enough efficient cars to uphold CAFE standards they should be good. But agreed it would be a travesty to lose the flat 6.

The key to Porsche keeping they're "big" engines is volume models like the Cayenne, Panamera, and new Maccan. If they can sell the bulk of those with small displacement engines they should be alright.

The only reason MB is able to sell those v12 behemoths is because the bulk of their cars are small efficient diesels

Looking at what the Cayenne did for Porsche in terms of volume, the cheaper Macan (getting good reviews) is going to drive it even more. If Porsche were to ever come out with a baby Panamera they just might get VW to that 2018 sales domination goal in no time at all.

CAFE is not a problem for them as they are part of VW... problem is that in Europe, taxes are based on fuel conumption these days (CO2) so 4cly will make their cars substantially cheaper and more accessible.
