Don't forget that Porsche was the first premium brand who adopted the Toyota Production System (at least in a legal way). I think this still has very much to do with their exceptionally high profitability.

I speced out my favorite Porsche model, a Cayman S on Porsche's website. Prices start at $64,000. Options I wanted were pearl white, red leather sport seats, navigation, xenon headlights, manual transmission, heated seats. Stuff that I thought should be standard like nav and the headlights were extras(nav was a $4000 option pared with a bose sound system!!!!!!) The upgrade to even choose red leather was like another $4000. With those options the car was $80,000!!!!
