Cadillac CTS: Motor Trend Car of the Year
"The 2014 CTS had to face stiff competition in its segment, which included the Infiniti Q50, the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class."
A GS not even mentioned.

Hence Lexus GS ineligible to compete due to it not being a completely new model or a major refresh NOT because it wasn't good enough.

I'd give it to the new Chevy Impala. The difference between the 2013 and the 2014 Impala can be measured in light-years. And Consumer Reports gave the new Impala 95 points out of 100 in its latest road-test.......something that no Cadillac has ever achieved. The Impala is now CR's highest-ranked sedan....after being cast off as a rental-grade appliance past year.

Many forget that the 2007 LS460 scored a 99/100 on CR

That's because MT COTY is for newly introduced models for that year. CTS and Q50 is all new. 5 series and E class underwent major facelifts for 2013. Lexus GS is still stuck in 2013 model year--the next major refresh is due 2014.
Hence Lexus GS ineligible to compete due to it not being a completely new model or a major refresh NOT because it wasn't good enough.

"Among vehicles fighting the 2014 CTS for the coveted Golden Calipers were BMW's 5-Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class — two of the cars the CTS was designed to compete against, and two of the standard-bearers of the luxury sedan class"
I don't buy the '13 thing.
Like the 5 and E,the GS is a '13.
Always excuses when the GS isn't even mentioned in the article and the lack of better sales.

If you think the GS wasn't considered because it wasn't good enough : consider this. Last year, the GS beat the 5 series,A6 and M37 in a MotorTrend head-to-head comparison. If the GS was good enough last year to beat the 5 series, why would the same magazine suddenly change its mind this year?
It's one thing to be neutral and fair minded. Seems to me more like you've an axe to grind with the Lexus GS and looking for a way to belittle it.

The mid-cycle updated Eclass and 5series are 2014 models.
The GS is a 2013 model.
I own a 2013 535i - its pre face lift!
The GS was evaluated when it was introduced.
Please read article and criterea for the cars.

What excuses? I gave the actual reason why the GS wasn't considered : it's still the same car as the one introduced in 2012. While both the 5 series and E class were re-introduced in 2013 as major refreshes.

I have a GS and love it.so no axe to grind.
Bottom line is the GS can't compete when it comes to interest or sales against the 5 or E and soon maybe the CTS.

Oh and another thing. This is straight from MotorTrend's website :
Motor Trend's Car of the Year program is open to any all-new or substantially upgraded 2014 automobile.
CTS = all-new
E-class = substantially upgraded
5 series = substantially upgraded
GS = no change --->so not eligible for consideration
