While the FR-S convertible hasn't been green lit, Toyota is going ahead with a (no-brainer) FR-S sedan. Great news, I think. Still no talk of a factory turbocharged FA20 unfortunately.

Wow... um... I'm curious as to why you feel this is a bad thing? The GT86/FR-S is still going to be in production. Toyota isn't doing too well in the RWD department other than their one coupe.

This makes no sense. If Toyota wants to bring over a RWD sedan bring over the Mark X or Crown. The Toyobaru Triplets are supposed to be pure sports cars not sedans. The idea that they'd offer a sedan before a convertible is asinine.

I disagree about making it a Lexus. That division already has a RWD compact that does what they want it to do: the IS250. And by extension the IS350 and IS-F. It's a great car but not the same kind of experience as an FR-S. And they killed the manual transmission model and have neglected to offer an LSD option as with the IS300.

The Toyota division needs a RWD sedan that isn't bent primarily towards luxury and is both semi-practical and truly a driver's car. Lexus had something like this with the Altezza/IS300 but they didn't want to sell that kind of sport compact sedan.

Now 250hp would benefit both the FR-S and this sedan. Also, I wouldn't mind it being marketed under the Scion division simply because the cars cannot be applied a markup if they are new. $25k for an FR-S is the only thing that has kept it a reasonable purchase. If it were routinely marked up to $30k or so (which dealers would love to do) then it would be a flop car. I'm okay with an FR-S based sedan being price fixed to allow the MSRP to stay MSRP since it's not going to be a powerful car.

All said, a small RWD manual sedan is a great addition to the market.

I'll believe it when I see it with the hybrid system (and how does one push more electrical energy through it or turbocharge such a drivetrain??) but 270hp stock or optional is what the car needs. The 6-speed manual and Torsen LSD must be retained, however.

The only people saying the FR-S needs more HP are those who haven't ever driven the thing at limits.

Fact is, the FR-S will outperform an IS-F at any autocross event. The car is sublimely balanced. A bigger motor would likely degrade the handling of the car, which is contrary to the purpose of it. It might be better to drive on the highway, sure, but overall the car would perform worse.

Love the idea. Hate the rendering by MotorTrend. Hopefully it'll simply be the same stylish 86 with a stretched wheelbase and 2 extra doors.

Also wish they'd go forward with the 86 roadster. The MX-5 could use some true competition.
