A San Diego man was arrested by police at gunpoint for allegedly leading them on a high-speed chase involving multiple police cars and a helicopter. The chase only ended when the man ran over a spike strip, puncturing one or more of his tires, according to a report from U-T San Diego.
The reason the man was fleeing? Not drugs, or drunk driving, or driving without a license - he was trying to get to the hospital in time for the birth of his child. Apparently, paramedics had taken his wife to the hospital, and he followed in his personal car. The report isn't clear, but at some point, the paramedics got far enough ahead of him that he resulted to speeding and swerving to catch up. The police, who occasionally make mistakes too, thought he was a drunk driver and attempted to pull him over. When that failed, the spike strip got involved.
Complying with the officer's directions, the father-to-be stepped away from the vehicle and was arrested. The man's argument that he was dedicated to being by his wife's side was apparently enough for police, who received confirmation from paramedics and released him. Proving that no justifiable crime goes unpunished, the cops have reportedly forwarded a report to the San Diego city attorney's office, which is debating whether to file failure to yield charges. It's unclear if the man made it to the hospital in time.

This guy is an idiot. His excuse is BS. His wife was already in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. He was running from the police for a while if they had to call for a spike strip and actually set one up. I hope they don't drop the charges otherwise it gives everyone a right to drive like an idiot in similar situations. This was not life or death. I bet the *** would have double parked his car in the emergency room entrance and thought that was okay too.

Wow.., He put countless lives in danger for one life, and he gets a slap on the wrist from the cops?
Dude should definitely get charged. They must have been chasing him for awhile to get a helicopter involved.

I'm on the side of the guy...
As usual, the cops walk into a situation uninformed and yet, they know what's right...they're making the decisions...you need to do what THEY say...even though they have no idea what's really going on.

so you can speed and swerve around the cars, possibly causing accidents, and they should not stop you at all, just because maybe your wife is giving birth? or maybe you are drunk?
what kind of backward thinking is that?

The cops, BTW, also took a chance. Spike strips don't always work with run-flat tires....assuming the vehicle actually has them. (although most run-flats aren't supposed to be driven above 50-55 MPH if punctured).

He didn't have a good excuse to drive recklessly since his wife was already being taken care of an the ambulance.
His real stupidity comes when he doesn't pull over for the cops. He should have pulled over and gave the cops his explanation. They may have let him go on the spot or the potential charges he could face would have been less severe.

This guy should definitely be charged. The safety of others was put at risk. When my wife was giving birth, she had no ambulance. I kept calm and collective. I put her in my car and drove her 10 miles to the hospital. This is through streets and highways. I did speed a bit, but obviously not enough to get LEO's to call for helicopter support or setup a spike strip...lol

As a father of two young kids I understand his need to be there but think he should have just stopped and told the cop what was going on and gotten an escort to the hospital or at least a warning and released. I hope he doesnt get charged but he will probably get a slap on the wrist
