Default Spy Shots: Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake

Jaguar's XFR-S Sportbrake looks to be one hot kinschlepper

This is the Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake, which is too cool for North American sale (the Sportbrake, not the XFR-S sedan, which we're getting soon). Like the XFR-S four-door, it has a 5.0-liter, supercharged V8 pumping out around 550 horsepower.

Our spy photographer's x-ray vision is saying that a ZF eight-speed automatic will be the gearbox of choice for the XFR-S wagon, which fits with the sedan, as well. The Sportbrake also has the usual high-performance touches, with huge air intakes in the front fascia, big wheels wrapped in low-profile tires, a dropped suspension and a rear end that's wearing a diffuser and a pair of meaty, quad exhausts. We're happy to see that the XFR-S Sedan's rear spoiler - or some iteration thereof – isn't here to mangle the Sportbrake's beautiful shape.

Where the this super-fast hauler will debut remains a question. There's virtually zero chance of it arriving at an American auto show (although we do endorse that, and any other decision that brings this wagon to our shores), which likely means it'll be in Europe. The Frankfurt Motor Show and Geneva Motor Show seem like the leading contenders, but we'll just have to wait and see.

LOL..."too cool for North American sale"??? What a joke !! It is because we dont buy station wagons here. That thing would never sell well here. "sport brake" LMAO its a station wagon. They have to call it a sport brake because nobody wants a high powered station wagon

Default Jaguar Gives us the New XFR-S Sportbrake Prior to Geneva Debut

One can only be excited when a new crazy estate or wagon car makes its debut on the world scene, even if only digitally: meet the Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake, a car that has 550 PS (542 hp) and 680 NM (501 lb-ft) from its supercharged V8, but also a maximum load volume of 1,675 liters (not class leading, but good; trails Mercedes’ E-Class estate by 275 liters).

Planned to be revealed to the press and public at the Geneva motor show, the car is exactly what you think it is – an XFR-S wagon that will be available for order in the UK as of April 1, starting at £82,495, or around €100,000/$137,600; available numbers will be very limited, as per the sedan.

Performance is on par with rivals, with 100 km/h (62 mph) coming up in 4.8 seconds and its top speed is electronically pegged back at 300 km/h (186 mph). The chassis has also been tuned to offer optimal handling with the new distribution of masses over the axles of the estate, using an active electronic differential in conjunction with stability control to enhance the handling characteristics.

Even the dynamics have been tuned, in the quest to reduce the dreaded lift that makes high-speed handling more of a chore than it has to be. This has been achieved with unique body parts taken from the sedan: deeper front bumper with splitter, extended side sills “and aeroblade mouldings behind the front wheels serve to create a sharp break-off point between the lower bodywork and the road surface in order to keep the airflow attached to the car’s sides for as long as possible.”

Wheels feature six spokes and measure 20 inches in diameter feature a ceramic polish applied to their outer surface, making for some nice contrasts with the bright available paint finish options – they can be had in either dark grey or full gloss black. They are complimented by matching pieces of trim on the body too.

The rest of the package is basically identical to the sedan, so the only thing left to do is check out the gallery below.

If Jag only used an aluminum chassis like that of the XJ for significant weight reduction, the XF (and all its body types) would truly be badass.

I'd love the new lineup for Jag. Surely beats the previous boring generation of all their models...

Default Jaguar Announces Sporty-Trimmed XF R-Sport for Geneva Debut

Click here to view more photos

Jaguar really needs more bread and butter cars in its range, despite the fact that all of its models are already direct rivals to similar cars from Germany, Japan and even America.

For instance, up until this point, the Coventry-based automaker did not have an answer to a BMW 520d with an M pack specified, but now it does, in the form of the new XF R-Sport, a new trim designed to inject some zest into the lower reaches of the XF range.

The XF is the first Jag to wear the new R-Sport badge, and it’s available on either of the two body styles. Its 2.2-liter engine pumps out the same 160 hp as before, which is sent to the rear wheels via the now familiar eight-speed self-shifter. The manufacturer says it’s increased the size of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (or just EGR) valves and “revised the cooling assembly” for a marginal 6 g/km CO2 gain over older cars.

Efficiency is really the prime concern of the XF, fitted with this diesel engine (and standard-fit start/stop), so the 57.7 mpg UK (48 mpg US/4.9 l/100km) they say it will do is adequate but not outstanding – the aforementioned BMW can manage closer to 63 mpg UK.

Performance-wise, the R-Sport doesn’t really merit the name, as it takes a leisurely 10.5 seconds to hit 100 km/h or 62 mph – a comparable BMW has more power and less displacement but needs around two seconds less for the sprint – you’ll need a three-liter Jag to match/beat one of those off the line, from the lights…

Other details aimed to set the R-Sport apart are the “Sport” front bumper, “R style” sills, as well as a subtle spoiler at the back. “Ursa” alloy wheels 17 inches in size complete the look, as does the specific badging. These come wrapped in low rolling resistance tires.

Inside, R-Sport models will set themselves apart from lesser XFs through the “new charcoal on charcoal interior, including Suedecloth seats available with contrast stitching in either Dove, Tan or Red. The interior is further complimented with a selection of Dark Oak, Piano Black or Carbon Fibre veneers to choose from. A Jet Morzine headlining comes as standard while a Dove headliner is available as an option and also for when a sunroof is specified.” Gloss black window surrounds come as standard, in place of chrome-effect ones.
