as I have been trying to point out, it is not just the consumption thats going on for diesel, as latest petrols are not bad... problem is that in Europe V6 or V8 petrol engines are not worth anything used anymore.

Combination of consumption and record fuel costs means that people wont even consider them.

So for me, it is not the question of if it is worth to pay the extra for diesel engine, diesel is simply only option in a car thats bigger than a city car, simply because 3 years later, petrol engine car wont be sellable in used car market.

If I lived in Europe a diesel would be a nice daily and then a nice petrol V8 for weekend use. Provided I could find the space to own both

Can't comment on the Audis, but between the BMW 35i petrol and 35d diesel, the petrol is definitely the more fun and engaging engine to drive, and it sounds better too. But man, the diesel puts down torque like crazy. Can't feel it as well in a 5200lb X5, but in the far lighter E90 335d I had for a loaner for a week once, it was an absolute HOOT! **** eating grin with that much torque in a lightweight car, and it got a legit 40 mpg highway. Best I've been able to do in my 335i is about 31 mpg straight highway. Pretty much agree with the video, petrol is a bit more engaging and more fun and sounds better, but the diesels really put the torque down and are far more efficient. They're both great in their own ways. It sure is nice to have both!

Don't feel like I'm getting tired of a convertible so might buy mine out, but if not I'd seriously be tempted by a 535d M-Sport, which is coming to the U.S. But then we wouldn't have a zingy gasser anymore. Torn.... #firstworldproblems

That 335d a few years ago put out 265hp and 425lbft. I believe there is a member on these boards (can't remember the SN) but his was chipped to 300hp and 500lbft

This reminds me of the Top Gear review between two kinds of BMW 5 Series E60: 530d versus 550i

Anyways, IMHO, there is no winner or loser in this kind of comparo. It all depends on what you value and what your objectives are.

Btw, this review is caters more to a UK audience...........so if fuel economy and overall value for money are the main criteria, then the diesel obviously wins hands-down.

In the UK for instance, Vehicle Excise Duty rates (which are based on CO2 emission levels) already favor the diesel model. Also, in the UK, diesel is cheaper than petrol (be it in London or North Umbria or Edinburgh, Scotland or Cardiff, Wales)

However, if I want more oomph and performance, I'd go with GASOLINE PETROL. Exhaust note and exhaust sound is better PLUS the redline is higher. If you opt for the diesel, you get thrill from 1000 RPM up to maybe 4,000 RPM max..........but after that, it starts to lose its intensity.

You're basically stuck at 5,000-6,000 RPM in a diesel.

With petrol, you can go as high as 7k, 8k, 9k or in some cars, 10k or beyond.

And imo, I'm driving an Audi............and Audi cars are generally for RICH PEOPLE (this is true where I am from..........and I guess this applies in a way in the UK???). How many rich people worry about their fuel bill?

Point is: If you can't afford an Audi or even have money to buy fuel for a PREMIUM automobile, then you're not part of their target market. If fuel economy is you're main concern and saving money is then you should either get a:

Toyota Corolla


or a

Volkswagen Polo Diesel


or take PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

I'm in that boat, though 300hp is probably an overstatement (270-280 is more realistic). 500lbft is definitely the real deal though. Love my oil-burner.
