Lets remember, Mercedes is not in the automotive business they are in the MONEY making business they just happen to build cars.
I totally agree

I am not judging and not being upset, just saying it is dumb.

Like watching a freak show, it is funny but is dumb.

Yep, and the S320 was surprisingly quick as well (for its time), or at least it felt quick and torquey.

My dad had one back in the 90s when I was a kid.....my first time riding in it he gunned from a stop pulling out onto a parkway and my jaw dropped by how quickly it got up to speed, considering it was only a 6 cylinder moving such a huge car. The car was full too, with 5 people in it.

His business associates had 420 and 500 models which were noticeably more powerful, but the 320 performed WAYYYY better than I ever thought it would. I wouldn't want an S-class without a V8 either, but the 320 was no slouch, surprisingly.

German I-6s are generally pretty strong.

But Maybach is another level............

Is like is ok for Maserati to have a cheap V6, but Ferrari can't sell anything cheap that have less then 8 cylinders..........they did it once and never again, probably realized it is a mistake.
That's American thinking only that v8 is the minimum for an ultra luxury car. And even a 6 cylinder Maybach will not be anything that can be considered cheap because all the amenities and special quality will still be there and the difference is just the cost of the engine which isn't really that much. Take the last Maybach brand models, had they put a S350 or S500 engine as an option , it may still cost $250 - 300K neighborhood.

Some rich people actually think they don' t want the unneeded power it just burn more gas (and it's not that they can't afford the gas either). They just think this is a car to be driven in around town leisurely and in in luxury but not for drag racing , or my Richard is longer than yours bragging purpose.
Besides some high end hotels and limo service would want these lower powered S Maybach models as their guest limousines.

Is not the power or speed, is the refinement that I care, refinement is determined by cylinder count. I care about how it feel, not how fast it is

You own a SC430 and I am sure you have driven a IS350 or GS350, same power, different level of refinement.

In fact, I would rather have a 300 hp V8 then a 400 hp V6.

Sure tons of rich people don't care about speed or power, but they all care about how smooth it feels.

It was also the only short wheelbase model W220 in the US. Total oddball.

haha, i don't think it's 'inappropriate' or 'dumb'. someone with money who gets driven around in a crazy busy city in asia for example does not need a V12. i know luxury isn't about need, but they won't even notice ANY difference between a smooth benz v6 and a V12 when going 0-30 through crowded streets in a city. as far as refinement, the car is so sound and vibration proofed it will be just fine.

^^^ Hotels and limousine services quite often if not always, order their Mercedes' with those numbers deleted. And the "smoothness" feel of bigger engines are usually less obvious to the passengers than the driver, especially in city traffic ...
