VW admits 2013 Jetta Hybrid gets worse mpg than Prius but claims it's for a reason

When the 2013 Jetta Hybrid was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, Volkswagen suggested the car would get 45 miles per gallon on the combined cycle. Well, we're now 10 months closer to launch – still scheduled for some time in late 2012 at a price that starts at $24,995 plus destination – and that's still the only efficiency number that Volkswagen has been able to hand out. At a media event in Santa Fe yesterday, VW spokespeople did say that they are working with the EPA to get the final city/highway numbers, and that we should see them shortly.

But the fact that we still don't know what the official fuel economy numbers will be doesn't mean we haven't learned a few things. For one, Rainer Michel, Vice President of Product Marketing and Strategy for Volkswagen of America admits that the gas-electric Jetta isn't as efficient as a Toyota Prius. However, Michel says that was a deliberate choice: "It is by purpose. We want the customer to have a great experience, fun to drive, and that's why we positioned the car this way." This fits in with VW's message that the Jetta Hybrid – the fifth powertrain option, along with various gas and diesel models – is "efficiency without sacrifice" and "the antidote to the common hybrid." Seems like everyone is picking on the Prius lineup these days.

wow VW lol. This is comparing apples and oranges. Toyota's HSD is much more developed than anyone else's for one. The coefficient drag on a Prius is .25. That's super slippery. BUT of course the Jetta is more fun to drive. Same reason why the Camry beat out the rest of its competition but the Passat still won because it was "better to drive".

Wow I thought the Prius base and 13 Accord hybrid wheels were ugly ...this makes them look great.

Also, strangely enough I saw a Jetta Hybrid cruising around Houston a few weeks ago...it was dark so I didn't get that great of a look but was able to make out the hybrid badge and LED tails...I was like, wow WTH is that? (not my pic)

The 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid will hit dealers near the end of 2012, and we've now learned that the new compact fuel-sipper will be priced from $24,995, (*) excluding the $795 destination charge.

For that price, buyers will be treated to a vehicle packed with a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a 27-horsepower electric motor. Total system output is rated at 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, and the only transmission on offer is a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox. According to Volkswagen's estimates, the Jetta Hybrid will return a combined fuel economy rating of 45 miles per gallon, making it the most fuel-efficient model in the Jetta range. The Hybrid will sprint to 60 miles per hour in just under nine seconds, and it can even cruise in EV mode at speeds as high as 44 mph.

Unlike other automakers that force you to spec a certain trim level in order to get the hybrid technology, Volkswagen is launching its gasoline-electric Jetta in four different configurations. The base model, simply called Hybrid, nets you daytime running lights, power/heated mirrors, 15-inch alloy wheels, Climatronic climate control, Bluetooth and a host of other class-standard features.

Moving up from there, the Hybrid SE – $26,990 – adds LED taillights, power reclining front seats, a MDI audio interface with iPod connectivity, a premium touchscreen radio, Sirius and keyless access. And for $29,325, you can spec the Hybrid SEL which includes goodies like 16-inch alloys, a power sunroof, navigation, heated washer nozzles, heated seats and a full-power driver's seat. At the top of the range is the Hybrid SEL Premium, featuring niceties like bi-xenon headlamps with LED running lights, foglights, 17-inch wheels, a rear-view camera and Volkswagen's excellent Fender audio system.

For comparison, the not-quite-as-efficient (but likely more fun to drive) Jetta TDI – rated at 42 mpg highway – starts at $22,990, and loading one up will set you back $26,990, excluding destination.

its crappy hybrid but gotta start somewhere... Autobild tested it vs Prius and they didnt recommend Jetta for purchase due to 30%+ worse real life economy.
