Yea its a little hard to believe, but every other car they compared it to in the story (ZL1, GT500, S63, Alpina B7, M5) may all make more or similar HP, they are all RWD. The only other big heavy powerful AWD car to run just as fast is the Panamera Turbo S which they stated is identical in acceleration.

The only car in the class that can match the S8 for straight line speed is its distant cousin, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S, and it's still a dead heat. The Panamera will hit 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, same as the S8, and run the quarter in 11.8 seconds at 118.0 mph to the Audi's 11.8 seconds at 118.3 mph.
AWD for the win?!

All of these other super high-powered cars are traction limited by RWD. When you have THAT much power, especially when making time to speed and time to distance measurements from a dead stop, AWD will give you the advantage. I'm guessing the M5 is faster from a roll and faster with most passing measurements due to more efficient RWD drivetrain and lighter weight.

Exterior is undercover badass.

I like it when super-saloons don't have red badging, crazy body kits, humongous grills or spoilers, stylized exhaust tips, and such (**cough**... IS-F... **cough**... GS F-Sport). Best example would be the Jaguar XJ Supersport. The only modification they have are different centercaps for the wheels, and obviously larger brakes/rotors.

yup, that's pretty much what i stated. when you have so much power and launch from a dead stop, awd is the way to go, otherwise traction is almost always the biggest problem (for rwd).

regardless, this is fantastic numbers on the s8!!!!!!!

Yup, when I buy a car for acceleration, it must be AWD.

But 2WD would work too, you just need tire this wide For anyone who is wondering, those are 21.5" wide rear tires off the DragQuoia

AWD doesn't always improve traction, and unless its a tricky torque vectoring system, it can actually compromise traction. This is why most high power cars are RWD.

With that being said, the GTR is AWD, afaik its much lighter and more powerful, and yet it barely edges out the S8? Something doesn't add up.

Correct, on ice it doesn't.

torque vectoring works in turns, 0-60 and 1/4 drag happens in a straight line.

The 2013 Nissan GTR with 545 hp and 3850 lbs does 0-60 in 2.7~2.9 secs, 1/4 in 10.9~11.2. That is not barely edging out, that is smoking the S8 by a few car's lengths.

The 2012 997 Turbo S with 530 hp and 3450 lbs does 0-60 in 2.6 secs and 1/4 in 10.8.

Everything adds up perfectly.

Not true. Front wheels lose traction much easier than rear wheels, and with traditional AWD systems, once the front wheels start slipping, open diffs cannot send anymore torque to the gripping wheels, and you just end up with massive front wheel spins. This is why most performance cars used to come with RWD only, and some more recent models that used AWD come with 80/20 torque split.

Torque vectoring solves this problem, and it absolutely works in a straight line as well as corners. Unfortunately it adds complexity and purists believe it takes away from driving experience.

Don't know about the Porsche, but 2.9 sounds way too optimistic for the GTR. The Lexus LFA is rated for around 3.2 and it consistently dusts the GTR, AFAIK.

one word (besides traction ): gearing.

OMG!!!!!!!! That's utter craziness! I almost don't believe it. I need more tests done on this insaneness.

And I would pick this 10 times over the odd-looking Pan Turbo. And I like the interior better than the S63's.

I love it's sleeper look. Imagine how classy and badazz that would be dropped a tad on some sexy rims. It would be clean and sexy and gawd-awful fast.

Good job, Audi, I'm uber-impressed
