Big problem with Land Cruiser's tranny
 

So I have a friend here who has a Land Cruiser but I don't know what year it is but I guess early 90's.
He drove the car and the car was fine and he parked it and left it there for several months but now he went to start the car again and the car started up fine but it won't move anywhere.
He towed it to a mechanic and the mechanic said that the transmission is burned up.
I told him that it is very rare for a tranny to go bad on a Toyota so to look at something else like maybe a clogged filter or maybe a rat ate the wires that connects the ECU with the tranny or something.
Do some of you have a suggestion on what else to check to see if something is clogged or something else?
Since he says that the car ran fine on the last day he drove it I am sceptical that it is the transmission itself.
So please any suggestion?

Is there fluid in the transmission? What year? Mileage? Maintenance history?

It's not my car so I don't know what year it is or it's service history or anything all I know is that it ran fine the last time he drove it and now it doesn't reverse or go forward

I.m planning to work on this car next week but I'll need some advice to help me.
Just because the car sat for 6 months doesn't mean a thing because I know people who let their car sit for 3 years and the transmission didn't go bad.
Hell my dad bought a Cadillac El Dorado that has been sitting for 26 years and the transmission still worked.
So there has to be something else.
Is it ok if I operate the tranny without the filter to see if it works?
Will it damage the tranny if I operate it without filter?
Because I'm assuming that it's a clogged filter here.
Can any of you suggest on what else I can look at?
How do I check for codes?
The same way as I do it on my Lexus or is it different?
I'm guessing if the tranny is really broken it should give me a code right?

if hardware is broken you won't get a code. However, if wires are chewed or electronics fail you probably would. The trans filter is likely at least partly to blame. Don't run it without a filter. Just replace it, you're going to the trouble of removing it anyway, put a fresh one in there with new fluid and see if she goes.

Cars are made differently. The torque converter could have gone, or check the 4wd transfer case selector lever. Those trucks, like a land rover I had, are primarily RWD, 4wd only with the shifter. If you put that shifter to the center, it disconnects the driveline at the transfer case. With the truck in park, shift that between low range, high range and 2wd, see if that helps.

Like others have said, it's a 20 year old truck that sat for a while. You may not think it's a long time, but if it wasn't started at all, it could be problematic. Start simple, work toward complicated.

Sounds like the car is about 20 years old. This means its also about time for a new ride it sounds like

Transmissions, like engines and differential/final-drive units, aren't designed to just sit for months without being driven. The extended lack of fluid-circulation and lubrication could have allowed the seals to deteriorate, allowing some of the fluid to leak out...maybe enough to keep it from operating.

how can someone here help you when even you have not a slightest idea about the car?

i would check land cruiser forums.... and try another mechanic for different opinion.

The car was build around 96 I guess.
This guy cannot afford a new ride so this is supposed to be his ride but we have to fix it.
That's why he can't buy a new filter to put in it so we're gonna have to fix it without buying parts or only buy1 part when we're sure that that's the part that needs to be replaced he can't afford to buy parts just for guesswork.
How do you check for troublecodes on these cars?
The same way you do it with a Lexus?
Is this car Obd 1 or Obd 2?
And is the transmission mechanicly controlled or electronicly controlled?

You really just need to find a mechanic that you trust.

In order to know OBD1 vs OBD2, you need to know the model year. If it's pre 1996, it's OBD1.

How do you expect to fix a part of a car that's gone wrong without replacing or buying parts? Diagnosing a problem is just that..guesswork. You start with the simplest stuff, eliminate that from the list of possible issues and continue on from there. A new trans filter WITH PAN GASKET goes for about $30 bucks. If he can't afford $30 for the filter to try and fix the car, how's he going to put gas in that pig and drive it anywhere?

OBD-II became mandatory in 1996, some cars like the V6 Camry and ES300 had it in 1994.
