Quick Spin: 2013 Ford Explorer Limited AWD
I think in this class, 20 mpg is pretty good. My '12 Mazda CX-9 gets 16-17; my '04 Honda Pilot got 17-18.
The new Explorer is solid for what it is.
Btw, the Dodge Durango is also neat too. But between this and the Durango, I think I'd choose the Explorer first imho.
P.S.
And damn Explorer Sport FTW!!! =)

Drove one in my week visit to Yellowstone as a rental. The AWD options for comfort and traction were pretty cool and we did hit some less-than-stellar off-road trails out there (Black Tail was one of my favs).
I was blown away by this vehicle. It's a high quality piece and a huge leap forward over what the Explorer used to be.

Yup, it's a real trooper. I haven't done anything except routine maintenance, well except for one oxygen sensor (it was cheap so whatever, $100). It's an amazing car and I can't bring myself to give it up and buy a newer RX. I know this thing can make it to 400k miles, and I'm going to try and get there.
The numbers in this article are for mostly highway (1900 miles), you are listing city numbers, or at least that's what it seems like. Even in the city I can do at least 18 mpg, in the summer it isn't unusual to get almost 19 mpg.
