Surely an anomaly.

maybe.
allow me to rephrase myself: the ILX and RDX is probably two most recent successful Acuras out there. they might not be close to where they expected, but they are hell a lot better than TL, RL, ZDX and TSX (esp the wagon version).

i think the RDX will trump MDX once the new MDX come out (the old MDX can almost be obtained for the same price as the RDX, but with SH-AWD and site for 7)

Unhappy Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) today reported August 2012 sales of 4,249 units, down 46.8 percent compared to August 2011.

Outlander Sport continues to be Mitsubishi's top seller in the U.S., and the month's sales total includes the initial sales of the 2013 Outlander Sport, which began production in Normal, Illinois in July.

"Customers continue to be attracted to the Outlander Sport's mix of style, performance, and fuel efficiency,"
said MMNA President & CEO Yoichi Yokozawa. "We expect sales of the Outlander Sport to be further fueled by our 'Unpretentious' marketing campaign, which began over the Labor Day weekend."

Incredible, look at those BMW drops! ES outsold the 3 Series, and the GS outsold the 5 Series!

Lexus outsold BMW for the month by a decent margin.

Let me repeat that again folks, the GS outsold the 5 Series

There is no way of knowing that. The 2013 ES was on sale for most of August, so hard to tell which sold more. If I had to bet, I would say the majority were of the new model.

Of course we shall see how ES holds in the future, but the main point remains; ES combined old and new model sales co-existed with GS sales for the month.

For a fickle and niche market segment, with sales still above 1,000, yes it's still doing relatively well. The luxury compact hatch segment is not a consistent segment in the US, it's extremely hard to maintain any sort of consistent sales in the segment.

No comments on Hyundai's mediocre performance for August?

That is true but keep in mind that this is only the first full month of sales of the new Altima. Most dealers still didn't have great inventory at the beginning of the month. When the redesigned Camry bowed it too had low sales the first few months and didn't really get going until about the third month of sales. That should be the case too with Altima.

You can't talk bad about Hyundai on internet

Surely the GS outselling the 5 is just a weird month. What's sad is the m37/56 selling barely over 660 units. The GS had outsold it 2 to one and now it's 3 to one.

FYI the ct outsold the crz, insight and ILX hybrid combined times two.

Which is offset by closing out 2012 models.

Around December we can see how the ES and Altima are selling with the new models. I think the Altima will sell at the same rate, haven't seen more plant capacity added and the coupe is dropped I think.

Did the camry slow down? I thought it sold pretty sold even when new.

Wow, so ES outsold the C Class as well. Absolutely amazing month for ES, the best-selling luxury car for August, with the RX the best-selling luxury vehicle for the month.

Yeah I totally get that, my main point was how strong Camry was against established competitors like Sonata.

Altima should do very well, we'll see how well it does in the coming months. Even though I'm not a fan of the exterior in real life, they did what seems to be an overall good job on the car.

Yeah it probably is a weird month, but when was the last time that happened between the GS and 5 Series? M37/56 sales aren't even worth mentioning sadly. Yeah my point is CT sales at almost 1500 is still strong for it's segment. It's down from last year, but those were exceptional sales last year.

C class is a killer since they added the coupe and revised it. Great job Benz.

Weird month for BMW...wonder what happened to the 5 Series. Can't say that the GS necessarily hurt it's sales, as GS was consistent at 1,600 - 2,000 units. I wonder if there were some negative effects of BMW's sell off from last month, where they marked almost anything with 4 wheels as "sold" to inflate the reported numbers.

I don't doubt that a solid portion of ES sales were selloffs of the old model, but I do not think the numbers are hugely inflated either. Dealers still don't have a full stock of 2013 ESs and the hybrid is in extremely high demand. Once inventories are up and production of the ES 300h is full-scale, I think we will see sales volume that is relatively similar to what we have seen from the 3 and C: 6,000 - 7,000 units a month into 2013. And those numbers include coupes for the Germans as well.

Comparing sales of the sedans alone, I think the entry lux segment will be a three-way race between the ES, 3 and C, though Mercedes and BMW don't break out their sales by model so we will never know.

Quick comparo:

August 2012 Sales by Brand
Lexus: 24,237
Mercedes: 20,557
BMW: 16,835
Audi: 11,524

Entry Level Luxury Sedan Sales:
Lexus ES: 7,557
Mercedes C Class: 6,519
BMW 3 Series: 6,208
Audi A4: 3,187
Lexus IS: 2,369

Midsize Luxury Sedan Sales:
Lexus ES: 7,557
Mercedes E Class: 4,515
Lexus GS: 1,831
BMW 5 Series: 1,688
Audi A6: 1,569

Entry Level Luxury CUV Sales:
Lexus RX: 8,628
BMW X3: 2,829
Mercedes GLK: 2,775
Audi Q5: 2,007

Midsize Luxury CUV/SUV Sales:
Lexus RX: 8,628
BMW X5: 3,568
Mercedes ML: 2,243
Lexus GX: 1,071
Audi Q7: 951

I included the ES with both sedan groups because at this point, I think it is relevant to include with both. While it is priced more like an entry level model, it is larger than most of the midsize cars and can also reach $45-$50k without much effort. Looking at these numbers, I do think that the ES is taking a bite out of the midsize market as a whole. Call me crazy, but I have seen the ES often cross shopped with the 528i, 535i and E350. The numbers for both of those cars are down this month. Solely because of the ES? No way...BMW is oddly off-beat but the E Class is long in the tooth and coming up for a refresh. Was the ES a factor? I think it would be silly to say "no".

BMW has a problem with the 3 series, and this is not just a one-month observation. The (old yet refreshed) C has either been nipping at the 3's heels or outselling it for a few months now. I remarked a while ago that the 3 Series was once a 8-10k a month car... but now, even with the brand new body style, they are averaging 6,500 - 7,000 a month. I know that the coupe and M3 have not been redesigned, but those will not make up for the 2-3k of missing sales volume. Mercedes has really hurt BMW here, I think. Once the IS and G are redesigned, and ATS comes online fully, this could be a real problem for BMW.

Lexus RX may very well steal the title of best selling luxury vehicle this year: BMW 3 Series (60,621) vs. Lexus RX (60,002).

RE: BMW

No reason to get all excited. 4GS had no effect on 5 series sales.

5 series numbers looked like a shortage, so I googled it to get some confirmation.

http://online.wsj.com/public/page/auto-industry.html

BMW AG on Monday said new-car sales for its namesake brand in the U.S. market declined 19% in August, and blamed the drop on a shortage of vehicles after strong gains in June and July.
Just an odd month. Will be back to 5000 soon.
