Yes, it is partly from the recession and a changing luxury segment. The current luxury segment now focuses on smaller entry level cars.

It should be no shock that the LS is not getting any new engines (I've known this for a while) as the lack of a V8 in the GS line confirms this. Lexus is not going to make an all new V8 for the LS only.

As for the platform, it does not need changing, what the LS needs is sharper styling, an updated interior and perhaps a turbo V6 or something along those lines.

I emailed Lexus and this was their reply

Q: Hello, I was wondering if the 2013 LS will be totally resign as a new generation or is the new 2013 LS just the current model but with the new spindle grille? Thank you

Thank you for contacting Lexus Customer Satisfaction.

We appreciate your interest in the 2013 Lexus LS.

At this time, complete information for this model has not yet been announced. However, we can advise that Lexus considers the new LS to be a major redesign rather than a minor refresh.

Lexus will reveal next year's LS at a special invite-only event in San Francisco, California on July 30. A press release discussing the reveal can be viewed at http://www.lexusnewsroom.com/

We hope that the design of the next LS will meet with your approval.

If we can be of further assistance, please respond to this e-mail, or contact Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-255-3987, Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Pacific Time.

Sincerely,

Alex Tiampo

Sometimes just go straight to the source.

I remembered when all the carnews site were guessing when the Toyobaru would go on sale. A member on FT86club sick of all the rumors and guessing just emailed Toyota/Subaru last year about when the FR-S and BRZ was going on sales. They replied and told him spring 2012.

I think in the end of day it doesn't matter if Lexus (or more likely, the customer service/PR person who answered your e-mail, who quite often knows less than we do) subjectively regards it as a "redesign". If the "redesign" only goes as far as the front fascia, tail lamps, some upgraded electronics and perhaps some suspension tuning, it is objectively still a MMC facelift.

notice how they didn't answer your question about it being a new generation.

Major redesign doesn't mean new generation.

An interesting review from auto media of how would the LS look like: http://www.automedia.com/Blog/post/T...Look-Like.aspx

TEASER IMAGE: What Will The 2013 Lexus LS Look Like?
by Ryan ZumMallenon 07.19.2012 17:31

A few weeks ahead of its official unveiling, the 2013 Lexus LS has made its first appearance. Kind of.

Lexus released a smoky teaser image of the upcoming flagship sedan on Wednesday, posting a darkened photo on their Facebook page (which seems to be the norm these days, after the SRT Viper leaked out over several weeks and the Mazda6 is being gradually released in Facebook videos). The image doesn’t tell us much, unless you expect the 2013 LS to be made out of dry ice.

But it does leave some interesting hints that the 2013 LS may be the most athletic and bold design since the model launched in 1989. Here are three things we can learn from the teaser image:
  • Family nose: This was to be expected, but it looks as though the new Lexus front fascia on the IS, ES, GS and RX models will carry over into the LS. The front of the car has a tell-tale dip at the nose, that is also apparent on the other models. Will they go full agro? Lexus is obviously trying to ditch their reputation for bland designs, but giving the LS such a bold face may be off-putting to customers looking for comfort.
  • Pronounced fenders: That whisp of smoke to the left, just below the rear window, indicates a contour line from the taillights into the side profile of the car. That means the LS could have aggressive haunches over its rear wheels. The 2012 LS came equipped with 18 or 19-inch wheels – does the 2013 edition have a 20-inch set in its future?
  • More coupe-like stance: Is Lexus taking a page out of the Mercedes-Benz CLS playbook? The LS obviously won’t fully commit to the sports sedan design, but this appears to be noticeable slimmer than the outgoing LS. This is interesting because it may signal a dramatic attempt to make the large sedan more athletic. Smaller dimensions may also reduce weight, improving performance and efficiency.
Of course, this is all speculation until the car is fully revealed; it’s also a lot of fun to guess. The LS will be up against tough competition in the Mercedes-Benz S550, BMW 740i and Audi A8 (which recently upped the stakes with 18/28 mpg). Powered by a 4.6L V8 engine, the 2012 LS made 380 horsepower and 367 lb.-ft of torque in RWD (357 hp and 344 lb.-ft in AWD). Expect more power and better efficiency from the 2013 LS, but considering the outgoing LS's reputation for luxury and safety, it will be a tough act to follow.

The 2013 Lexus LS will be unveiled later this month.
