With the success of the IS250, and mercedes coming out with a C250, I'm surprised they dropped the G25 so fast. Most people buy a car for the looks/features anyways... Thats why you see so many IS250s and 328s on the road!

I guess they just didn't know how to sell it. G37 is already a great value machine so what does that make G25? They couldn't figure it out obviously.

On a side note their 2.5 is a bit outdated kind of like Lexus unit so bringing it to the market this late maybe had something to do with it. Hopefully next gen will be turbo four.

I still say, as I did back when the G25 came out, that they should have made it a G30 instead. I miss the old VQ30DE I had in my Maxima. Sweet engine. Give it a good 240hp/220-230tq and it would have been a fine performer with beefy enough torque to pull some nice overdrive gears and probably get better mileage than the G25 did, which wasn't that impressive. And it would perform decently, too. Better than the IS250 and A4, and on par with or better than the C300 and 328i. And yeah, they probably did screw up the options availability mix too by not making navigation available in the G25. That was dumb.

I agree, they should have went with a 3 liter but if a 2.5 with a little over 200hp only gets 2-3mpg better then the 3.7 then a 3.0 is not going to be any real improvement in efficiency either, it will just be quicker and more enjoyable which is not what they were shooting for. It is amazing and disappointing how their 3.7l with around 330hp is only getting 2-3mpg less then a 2.5l with 220hp that is much slower. If that is all Nissan can get out of such a small engine why even bother with that smaller VQ engine, they really need a new design if it is that inefficient because they can't just stick the gas guzzling 3.5-3.7l VQ in so many cars with gov regulations and possible fines looming. I am still surprised they are dropping it so soon as they need something quick, I am sure the G will eventually be getting some kind of turbo 4 or hybrid soon to address CAFE. I would like to see the IS entry engine bumped up to 2.8-3 liters with around 240-250hp, that would be perfect and it would not longer be so underpowered.

Infiniti's recent trademark applications indicate that the next G will be available in hybrid (G35h), turbo (G30T), and diesel (G22d) forms.

Yup a mix of Mercedes and Renault engines. I would find it hard to believe the VQ is dead that endings one was so influential and still solid.

The turbo if moddable can maybe compete with the FI cars from Germany.. Though ironically it might be another German engine but in a Japaneae car. Purists will scoff but surely many will be happy to hopefully modify and increase the boost in the G30t.

Yeah

VQ engine series is really solid. Ward's top 10 engine award list for like more than a decade. I'd choose VQ series over say QR or SR series engines (btw I don't mean offense to those who have Silvia's and 180SX and whatnot.)

Not entirely true. With larger displacement you get more torque, which means you can pull taller gearing, or hit the taller gears sooner, and in turn get better fuel mileage. Going from a 2.5 to a 3.0 isn't going to significantly increase the friction profile either. I think the biggest problem is that these latest generation Nissan VQ engines simply aren't designed with fuel efficiency as a high enough design priority. Obviously it was a lower priority, otherwise why would they be supporting 7500rpm redlines? The high RPM biased powerbands hurt your efficiency at more normal RPMs also. If BMW can make a 240hp/230tq 3.0L N52 I-6 engine and get a 528i (2011) to get 32 mpg highway, then there's no reason that Nissan couldn't do the same with a modernized VQ30 engine.
