Default 2014 Toyota RAV4: revealed at L.A. Auto Show

Finally...first spy shots of the next generation RAV4.

In late 2010, Toyota revealed its RAV4 EV prototype, which will enter limited series production in the second half of this year. It will be a short run for the regular RAV4 as well, however, as a new model is due in early 2013.

Shown in these spy shtos, it will share the same basic proportions with the current RAV4, but with some notable tweaks to its shape, especially up front. The hood and fenders at the nose appear to be quite a bit taller than the current model, likely in response to pedestrian safety regulations.

At the rear, the tail lights of the new model now extend onto the liftgate, though many of the other details remain the same, including the lower reflectors and the location of the tailpipe. A roof-mounted spoiler similar to the current RAV4 is also visible. While the rear-most window is covered in the prototype's spy shots, it will likely keep the upward kick of the current model as well.

As for what's under the hood, it will likely be an extension of the current model range, including both four-cylinder and V-6 versions, though updates to the engines may offer better fuel economy or power.

That grill looks huge!

Otherwise, the shape of the car is conservatively carried over.

Finally! New Gen should arrive already, the current Gen with low grade interior has been on sale for way too long.

time to retire that ancient 4 speed auto in the 4 cylinder models. i'd take a front drive 3.5L v6 with 6 speed auto, it'll be a speedster among CUVs and probably gets the same or better mpg as the new CRV.

No way the 3.5 with the 6 speed touches the CRV in fuel economy. No way.

I have never seen anything with a toyota V6 ever get more than 30mpg unless it was coupled with a hybrid powertrain.

Not sure I like this new design for this particular vehicle. I will have to see it "naked" before I make my final judgement though.

The basic shape of the previous generation is still there from what I can see. It does not look much larger if any at all.

Also, the headlights are sort of like the FRS headlights with the addition of LED daytime running lights.

A hybrid version of the Rav4 would be a great addition if they decide to add one.

Some of the current generation RAV4s don't have the spare tire in the rear since they use Run flats.

Could they possibly have gotten rid of the "barn door" tailgate?!
