One '08 Volvo S40's mechanical problems
Saw this post on another forum on a '08 S40 with 37K miles.
The guy was trading it in for a Honda. Problems. " I could go on for a page or two but a quick run down of most problems : Air bag system problems, Thermostat problem, driver side window stopped working 3 times. power seat stopped working 3 times, rear view mirror would not stay put and fell down needing constant readjustment, water pump failure, powersteering failure, fuel pump failure, traction control and antilock break failure, steering linkage and colum problems, constant TPS malfunctions.....just to name a few. Car had to be towed many times back to the dealer. I just had enough and decided it had to go." Clean car. http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i2...0/100_3024.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i2...0/100_3023.jpg |
My aunt had a lot of issues with her Volvo S60 as well, a lot of things kept going wrong with it, but after about 60k miles it just fell apart. In fact the transmission completely died twice. The repairs were very expensive, and nobody but the Volvo dealership seemed to want to do the replacement so my aunt was stuck with the bill. Other things started to break... it was one thing after the other. Then one day a pick up truck rear ended her Volvo at 50+mph on the freeway while she was at a dead stop - the Volvo's airbags didn't deploy even though she hit the car in front of her too, she blacked out, but the Volvo took the impact well and probably saved her life in the end even though the airbag didn't deploy. After everything, she never wanted a Volvo again.

No wonder why Volvo has great deals, low financing and 5 years free maintenance. Too bad because the S60 is a nice looking car. |

Must be isolated incidents because Volvo's reliability ranking are pretty high in various surveys and I've had no problems whatsoever with my XC60 which is nearing 70K.
|
My 06 s60r has had no problems change the oil and go. I rag it to now with 70k miles. I would of got rid of it after the airbag issue.
|
Wife's friend's mom was in a similar accident. The airbag fired, and the chemicals from the explosive blinded her for three days. The bruises on her face took two months to go away. I heard it from the mom first hand.
I'd say if the airbag didn't go off she was better off for it overall. |
Wow, didn't know Volvo is this bad!

In general, Volvo reliability seems quite okay. Of course, there may be a few instances where a few cars may have some problems but overall, it is okay. Remember no car brand is perfect after all. I have no reason to fear Volvo because they have a reputation of making safe cars (for more than 50 YEARS). Volvo FTW :) |
Holy crap. I agree totally with OP. My friend has an 08 S40 manual trans. The AC has been fixed 4-5 times now and as we speak, he has not had cold air blowing since the end of summer. He gave up on it and said will deal with it in the spring. All the oil disappeared some how (no stains on his driveway or in his spot at work) requiring a new engine 1 year after purchase. His sunroof does not work and got stuck in the open position last week. He ended up driving his Jeep Wrangler with the ripped soft top because he said it was still warmer inside. He hates it and is deciding to fix the AC and then just get rid of it. I will never buy a Volvo and neither will my friend.
