2012 BMW M5 gets dyno'd, all ate up with power

A German tuning outfit called PP-Performance has put the 2012 BMW M5 on a Maha dyno, and the numbers returned were 444 horsepower at the wheel, 553 at the engine, and a "corrected number" of 574 hp. Max torque came in at 532 pound-feet (721 Newton/meters).

Compare those figures to the official numbers of 560 horses and 502 lb-ft. If the 444 number is accurate, then no matter how you slice it on horsepower – whether you use the numbers from BMW or PP-P's figures – you're losing around 20 percent from the engine to the wheels. However, adjusting for driveline and twin-turbo losses, that puts things right about where they should be. The 30-lb-ft surplus of torque, on the other hand, is the kind of surplus no one would complain about – again, assuming it's accurate.

Cute...M5 used to be about low weight, a manual and feel. At this rate whats next 600hp, then 650hp, while weighing 5000lbs seating 12? They should call it the M7 at this rate. A 7 series based M5? It leaves me extremely cold since this is exactly what Benz, Audi, Jaguar offer.

The 4GS managed to keep its weight from the 3GS albeit a few pounds. Compared to that of the new 5 series which gained 400lbs over its E60 predecessor.

Not sure M5's were ever all that light (e28 was just over 3400lbs and it all went up from that) but they have surprisingly been fun cars. I track a 2500lb e30 m3 (with an s54 engine) and had an e60 m5 for a daily, and honestly the m5 was a ton of fun to throw around even at 4000lbs. They are fast cruisers but the new M3 is the car for you if you want something smaller and more nimble.

I wouldn't mind the new M5 for an out-of-the-box fast car though. I'm sure a nice tune will turn it into a beast...
