Exclamation Man Accidentally Blows Up His FJ - While Inside

Discovered on FJCruiserforums:
I blew up my FJ... literally...
So my time almost came to an end this morning... im very lucky to be alive.

First of all, GO HUG YOUR WIFE/HUBBY and tell them you love them.

i had an acetylene bottle in my truck, the valve was bumped so slightly and over night the truck filled with the gas. i noticed the smell, and opened the doors to air out the truck. i drove the truck out of the garage to get some more air movement. i went to roll the pass side window down and as soon as i touched the power windows. BAM. with me in the truck. i lost all hearing out of my right ear and got a scratch on the back of my head. all things considering, im alive.

so now ive got the question out to toyota about a 2012 TT. 125 to canada only, 15 in standard. i want a standard...

pictures tell 1000 words.

dont take any minutes or seconds you have for granted... it may be your last...

peace everyone,
evan...
What is frightening are the pictures. How he survived is a miracle.

If you smell gas, stay away from electrical switches and RUN AWAY!!

I'm surprised didn't pass out from lack of oxygen. If I smelled gas be damn sure I'd pull that tank out and open everything for awhile before I even got on the car.

lucky he got out with minor injuries

youd think someone experienced enough with acetylene willing to transport it would be a bit more careful

It is actually completely, 100%, totally ILLEGAL. You have to have a Haz-Mat liscense to carry Acetelyne, for this exact reason. You have to, by law, post placards on your DOT APPROVED transporter.

I will be suprised if his insurance pays out. Sad, but its the truth. If you can afford a tank of acetelyne, you can afford to have it delivered to wherever you need it. They arent cheap. He is lucky he didnt kill himself or someone else.

I am sorry if I sound like a pompous ***, but I have no sympathy for stupidity. I am glad he and others around are alright...but I will bet next time he will put it on a trailer.

He was on the 12 step program to stupidity.

1. Leave (open) bottle of acetylene in truck, in garage, overnight.
2. Air out truck by opening doors in garage.
3. Close doors.
4. Start truck and drive it out of garage.
5. Attempt to open power windows instead of opening doors.
6. Oops.

Further steps were unnecessary.

It sounds like his initial airing-out of the car simply lowered the gas concentration back into the eplosive range. My bet is that sparking inside a power window motor on startup is what triggered the explosion.

a darwin award of dinstinction.

why not open all the doors and back hatch manually to let the gas out FIRST before driving it anywhere!?

Amazing! He is very, very fortunate.

The take way from this: don't leave acetylene or propane tanks in your car overnight or ever.

Exactly. I wondered what he was doing with a tank of acetylene inside his truck in the first place. Surely if he is a welder he knows something about the hazards of the gas. Most apprentices have messed around, setting off acetylene explosions in empty buckets or barrels . . . guess he didn't make the connection.

Good bet! The initial concentration was probably too rich to ignite, but once a little air brought it back to stoichiometric . . . . Hey, let's open a winBOOM!

I've gotta make a one-mile propane run for the gas grill tonight, and I don't care if it's freezing out, those windows are staying open! I spent a few years around high explosives, and I learned enough to know WHY you read the instructions and follow the regulations. It's all about respect - for flammables, explosives - and your little pink body.

Wow sometimes i wonder why people don't exercise some common sense. This kind of thing could have easily killed the owner and other people. Imagine if that thing exploded while he was driving on the road around other cars. Glad the owner did not toast himself and i'm sure he will never be transporting that stuff again!

Some of the comments say Toyota should give this guy a new one for free. LOL...what?!

Interesting comment there though by someone..

I'm almost thinking he was standing outside the truck / had the door open, thus allowing a good portion of the blast to vent out. I mean look at the pictures, the drivers door is the only body panel besides the hood and fenders that isn't shredded.
Seem like that to anyone else? Now that i look at it.....It is interesting that the drivers door is the only one not blown open.
