Ford and General Motors rivalry gets sharper

Thanks to the humbling experience of the automotive bailout, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler have projected an air of amiable competitiveness over the past few years. That era may be coming to a close, however.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford and GM may be stoking one of the automotive industry's greatest rivalries once again. Executives within both companies have taken pot shots at their competitors over the past few months with GM CEO Dan Akerson insinuating that Lincoln, Ford's luxury arm, wasn't long for this world. Jim Farley, the head of marketing for Ford, meanwhile, let loose a torrent of vitriol toward GM in the book Once Upon A Car by Bill Vlasic, saying he hated GM and all that the company stands for.

These pot shots may be indicative of growing weariness by both automakers. GM has carved out larger profits and greater market share than Ford over the past few months, and The Wall Street Journal reports that Ford now considers GM it's largest threat. Previously, Ford has eyed Toyota as its largest competitor.

I'm betting on Ford.

GM is still in a deeper hole.

GM FTW! Better cars in every category. Corvette and Camaro rule their categories! And Caddy has no competition from Ford. Lincoln = Buick. So they took a bailout... who cares. They survived, now making money. Government loans now getting paid back. Now with new GMs IPO, taxpayers are making money on the bailout. Win-win.

Go Ford. The *only* thing I would buy from GM is a Corvette.

Both build quality ****, lets see if all these cars with improved quality can go the distance without the car falling apart.

GM, on the whole (though there are a few exceptions, like the Mustang) , seems to be doing MUCH better interiors now than Ford. Other than that, IMO, there doesn't seem to be much basic difference between the two in powertrains, sheet-metal, paint-jobs, road-manners, etc.....

When it comes to trucks, I like the Ford interior much better. I don't want my truck's interior to look like a Malibu.

Something about growing up around Ford trucks has instilled a certain passion for them in my heart.

I do miss the Pontiac Firebird however.
