Subaru BRZ coupe announced as name of Subaru FR-S FT-86
via FT86CLUB
Along with an announcement that they'd be showing a technology concept of it at the Frankfurt auto show next month, Subaru just dropped the name "BRZ" for its sports coupe version of the Toyota FT-86 / Scion FR-S sports coupe.
BRZ stands for "Boxer engine", "Rear-wheel drive" and "Zenith"
I'm putting my bets on the Subaru BRZ coupe being a much more exciting car than the Scion FR-S / Toyota FT-86.

Terrible name. Sounds like "BRRRR" or my old foreign neighbor who used to flaunt his Beeperzzz, circa 1999.
This is a good example of when corporate takes over with some ethical or cultural formula, and the car guys who know the current car trends don't have a hand in it. "SC", "G", "LS", "tC", and "GT" all have nice rings to them and that's the direction Subaru should have followed.

We'll wait and see, but I think the RWD Subaru version is going to flop. People usually buy Subarus either for bad-weather traction or rallying capability....both of which generally mean a need for AWD.
The Toyota and Scion versions, though....that's another story. IMO, they have a much better chance of succeeding.

A version of the SVX was fwd so it is not like Subaru has only sold awd cars.

If Subaru offers the 300hp turbo version like is rumored then that is really going create buzz and could sway enthusiasts toward the BRZ. Not sure if the Scion will offer a turbo version since they want to keep the price reasonable, it may only get the NA 200hp or so standard motor which may not be enough to many enthusiasts for a car like this.
