The $20 SL
 

Last week Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton was leaving for his new job with the Arizona Cardinals. He'd become friends with the team cook Maurice "Mo" Matthews over the years as Matthews admired coach Horton's beloved red 1999 Mercedes 500 SL. The teasing went back and forth for ten years - Matthews drooling over the car and Horton telling him he couldn't afford the gas for it. It was all in good-natured fun and the two had become fast friends.

Until last week when Horton was clearing out his office preparing to move to his new job as defensive coordinator for the Cardinals. He walked into the cafeteria to say goodbye to the staff and called to Matthews, "Hey, I need a favor from you. How much money you have in your pocket?"

Matthews said he thought he had $20.

"Sold for $20!", said Horton - and handed over the keys to Matthews' dream car.

"Stop playing with me Ray, don't play with me . . . ", said Matthews, but Horton was serious. Ray said, "Hey you've always liked the car, you're a good dude, I know you'll take care of it. It's yours."

Horton had Matthews drive him to the airport the next day and signed over the title to Mo. He now owns the red Mercedes roadster that once he could only dream about. Good things do happen to good people. ;)

That's awesome! I love those old SL's.

I really like the 1st (original gull wing), 2nd and 3rd gen. The rest not a fan of.

It is insane, how some of the classics can hold their value or even sell for more then they were sold back in the day. I can't wait until I have the money and just start collecting cars.
