Ward's Automotive picks best car interiors of 2011

Wards Automotive takes its 10 Best Interior awards seriously. The industry mag tested 51 vehicles to come up with this year's winners, which span three luxury vehicles, three economy cars, a sport sedan, a minivan, a family sedan and an SUV. Ward's AutoWorld Editor-in-Chief Drew Winter says the publication has never tested so many vehicles, adding, "Every auto maker wants the freshest, highest-quality interior possible for all the vehicles they sell."

Showing just how much the world of interiors has changed over the years, Chrysler was the only automaker to take home two awards, thanks to the Dodge Charger and Jeep Grand Cherokee, while Kia and Hyundai could technically say the same since the Elantra and Optima each took home honors. At the same time, both Toyota and Lexus were shut out, as was Honda's Acura luxury brand and Mercedes-Benz.

Among the first-time winners for 2011 are the Ford Focus Titanium and Chevy Cruze.

Wow the Audi is nice! I love the wood trim.

Hard to beat the A8's interior. Among regular-production cars, it would be my first choice, too.....though a couple of Rolls-Royce models (which are very low-volume, hand-built cars) beat it. Another very strong contender, among production cars, is the Jaguar XJ.

article is misleading. Im assuming to be even considered, it would have to be a new car for the model year, meaning that Lexus only had the CT going for it.

dont know why the bmw x3 is on the list. the wood looks so cheap

The only car I can whole-heartedly agree with on this list is the A8; that interior is literally resplendent.

Good to see some American iron on the list. hard to tell what their criteria was. Looks like it was design above all else and i have no problem with that. By that measure the BMW is the least appealing of the group to me.

Agreed, in person the X3 interior is not that nice.

It's one thing for an interior to look nice. I prefer my interior to feel nice. Lots of new cars that I've sat in at this year's Detroit auto show have really hard plastics that look good but feel cheap. The one car that surprised me was the Kia Optima, the interior looks like that out of the A5 and feels nice to the touch to boot.

Yes. It's just too cold and impersonal for me. The Audi and the Volvo manage to be clean and modern without being austere like the Bimmer.

TJW98LS 04-12-11 08:41 AM

Disagree with everything but the Audi A8.

Exactly.......

if the award was for best interior improvement, a lot of these cars deserve it. but they are not some of the best ones out there.(the american cars)

Surely a design study more than an engineering/technical one.

It doesnt surprise me that Audi was mentioned. I am impressed with the Kia's interior as well. I dont agree with the Dodge or Jeep interior at all
