^^ Good points by Caddyowner, keeping maintenance and repair costs down during the ownership might be important to OP.

Scion Xb would be another choice (economical/practical/reliable) in price range mentioned.

I agree on not buying a luxury car at $12k. For the most part.... a well maintained and good condition car like a 2003 GS430 will be alot more than $12k at a dealership. I would probably buy a newer Camry or something else that is basic to keep the maintenance costs down. Unless you're a good mechanic or got a cheap hookup, I'd avoid buying a luxury car. Definitely not for everyone.

Too bad you're in GA. I would be willing to part with my 2003 IS300 for 12k. Has 91k miles and just did my 90k service with brand new tires on all 4.

I would not be caught dead in an xb, civic, or corolla.

Thanks for all of your suggestions, and I will report back once I have the car.

Best of luck in the search for a luxury car on a economy car budget.

Yep, that almost never works out well. I help one of my sons buy a low mileage 17 year old Lincoln Town car as a first car. I'm surprised AAA didn't cancel our membership due to all the needed tows in the first year.

I knew a college student who purchased an Audi at a bargain price (it was a financial disaster within 12 months).

Lux cars at economy car prices have risks, but what the heck.
