there were no electrical problems. if there were no problems, then why did they do a recall for floormats and to modify the accelerator pedal? no problems or not, theyy failed to report nhsta in the required amount of time that there coooould be an issue with floormats or pedals getting stuck.

btw, if they werent charged for not reporting the issue in time. ignore everything i typed haha. im too lazy to look it up

Because people are stupid and if Toyota did nothing, the uproar would've been worse.

It is a truly sad situation, in order to maintain the image that they've spent millions to protect from tarnishing, they cannot sue. In the end, Toyota must be the gentleman and walk away. They do deserve the penalties they paid though, that is just wrong. Also, they deserve a public apology from government and mass media that participated in this lynching. I'm glad there are groups like CL that help spread the message of truth, most of us here on CL didn't give into peer pressure and have supported Toyota from the beginning.

Apology and refund not likely.

At least the full investigation including NASA's input made it official, no electrical interference problem found.

I agree. Certainly not the apology part, and most likely the refund part either.

I love how the media did not make the reporting of the nonexistent electric problem the big headline for days/weeks like they did when there was a "problem". Those long discussions of how Toyota got blamed for no reason should be viewed by the mass television crowd. Toyota did no wrong, the government and media did in order to slander the biggest Japanese automaker so US automakers can have a shot of selling their cars.

I thought the unintended acceleration problem was BS from the start and have argued it with some of my friends from the start. I bet they don't want to talk about it anymore. That whole floor mat issue was created by one idiotic Lexus dealership for using the wrong floor mats in the ES. To this day, I still use a 3/4" thick afermarket floor mat on top of the carpet mats in my IS. I played around with the mats and tried all kinds of way to force it to get jammed to no avail. I wonder how that ES passed inspections.

I too have defended Toyota from the start. The stories and lack of hard evidence never added up (remember the bogus blue Pruis driver from San Diego?). The core situation was a floormat problem w/o a fast way to shut off the engine in a panic situation. Nothing more.

What should happen is an apology. That in itself would help sales, which would make up for the fines and loss of sales. Of course, this will never happen. But what can be done is this.... I personally make it an effort to tell my friends, family, and customers there is nothing wrong with Toyotas/Lexus and they should continue to buy them. That's the best thing we can do to help out a deserving company.

This probably pissed off a lot of GM and Ford owners, wonder what they are going to complain about now...

Pathetic, not on the news at all. Nothing. It was a witch hunt.

I hope the new generation of Toyota/Lexus murders GM/Chrysler.
