And the original Mini carried 4 normal adults as opposed to 3 adults + a legless child in the case of the Toyota iQ/Aston. My mother regularly travelled the country with both my grandparents plus my brother and I in hers.

At the D.C. Auto Show, the Fiat display included a yellow 1970 500 to compare with the latest new 500 models sold today. By our standards, it is ridiculously small (in fact, even the Italians nicknamed it "Topolino" meaning "Mouse")...makes you wonder how adults ever fit into it. The new 500s, of course, are significantly larger and roomier.
Back to the thread title (the original Mini), it was one of the most revolutionary cars of all time. Designed in 1959 by Sir Alec Issigonis and his staff (a Greek auto engineer working for the Austin/Morris company), it was the first mass-produced vehicle to incorporate a transversely-mounted engine/transaxle and FWD for space efficiency. In time, of course, a majority of the auto industry would adopt that basic layout....and it is still in widespread use today.

This isn't car related but is "small" related.
I've been watching House Hunters International and I couldn't believe how small those apartments and homes are compared to the U.S. where a small apartment or home would be considered "big" outside of the U.S.
I think us Americans are spoiled and we tend to be bigger in size due to the abundance of cheap food and our lackadaisical lifestyle where we have to pay a fee to physically exert ourselves (aka gyms).
