Default Lotus Announces New Custom Engine Partnership wth Toyota

http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2...th-toyota.html

For years Lotus has relied on Toyota engines to power its incredible sports cars. Tuned by Lotus engineers, powerplants like the 1.8-liter 2ZZ came alive in lightweight Lotus vehicles, while Toyota’s reputation for quality, reliability and durability meant that owners never had to worry about how many miles they put on their car or how hard they beat on them.

Today Lotus and Toyota announced a future partnership that will see the Japanese auto giant produce “tailor-made powertrain solutions” for Lotus vehicles in the future.

The announcement was bade the the British embassy in Tokyo where Lotus CEO Dany Bahar presented Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda with the very last Toyota 2ZZ-GE-powered Lotus Elise to ever be built.

“The presentation of Toyota’s last 2ZZ engine in the Elise is a symbolic gesture of our continued respect and deep appreciation for our partner not only acknowledging our past but also looking forward to our future together,” said Bahar.

More details of the continued partnership between the two automakers will be announced at the Paris Auto Show on September 30th.

Nice deal for Lotus. I've got to be honest, this whole situation is a little bit bittersweet: these guys get the best versions of engines that are right under our noses!

Sounds like the loophole for that supposed bespoke LFA engine.

I think its promising for Toyota/Lexus as they are moving to offer sportier products.

Funny, Lotus is like a Toyota cousin and shouldn't we like them more?

Seems like a win-win relationship.

Lotus's reputation gains because of Toyota's reliability.

Toyota's reputation gains because of Lotus's legendary reputation for motorsports.

As stated by the article, its been working well for years.

There is a rumor that the Lotus F1 team will be tossing out the current Cosworth engines and installing something "exciting" next year. I'm assuming they will be using the Toyota F1 motors similar in design to the '08 & '09 season.

I'm missing where this announcement hints at the LFA engine going to Lotus. Doesn't it specifically say that Toyota will create "tailor-made" powerplants for Lotus?

+1

That's how I'd interpret "custom engine partnership" too, although I hope it doesn't really mean a "custom"-tuned LFA V10.

Time to see if we can ply Lotus engineers with money, alcohol, women...whatever it takes to get the keys to cracking Toyota's engine management!

They will be using "Renault" F1 engines I believe.

As I've stated a few times they share TOYOTA engines, not Lexus ones. Thus they don't get DI engines that Lexus uses.

Will that now change with this new agreement? Doubt it. Sounds like some serious engineering together.

LFA engine in a Lotus would be nice. It be for all the people who weren't vetted in the selection process

Plus it probably be a fraction of the price hehe

Toyota-Lexus + Lotus + Tesla = Marriage made in heaven
