I hope this is wrong info, they already have more SUVs than cars, the Japanese Jeep DOES NOT need ANOTHER SUV. This has to be wrong.
Japanese Jeep? wouldn't that be Lexus? They do, afterall, sell more SUVs than passenger cars in their lineup. In fact Lexus sold 9,623 SUVs in July compared to just 8,972 passenger cars. So basically 52% (most of) their sales in July were SUVs. Now compare that to Infiniti who sold only 2,758 SUVs in July compared to 7,006 passenger cars. So basically only 28% of their sales were SUVs.

So to summarize:

Lexus: 48% of their sales come from passenger cars. (with 6 models)
Infiniti: 72% of their sales come from passenger cars. (with only 2 models)

The question I would have is why is Lexus only selling 8,972 passenger cars with 6 different models while Infiniti is selling 7,006 passenger cars with only 2 models?

Infiniti's SUVs are more niche vehicles than anything else. Sounds like they're looking to offer a high volume SUV with this new JX to compete more with the RX, MDX, etc. However, to call Infiniti the "Japanese Jeep" when 72% of their sales come from sedans and coupes is pathetically laughable.

Wow you quote one month of car sales A month Infiniti did well and Lexus struggled with. Lol. How about YEARS of data. Its not even a race. Do you know why they sell? Maybe ask all the struggling dealer owners. Maybe ask the General Managers with margins so thin they might as well work for GM.

Its called heavily subsidized leases. It's called over 60% of their sales are one model, the G37 which can be had for a near socialist $319 a month or the coupe for $339 a month. Its called dealers so desperate they knock thousands off vehicles that just debuted so someone will buy it.

For goodness sakes, 2 cars, 3 current SUVs and another SUV? Really?

What you fail to mention is the EX and FX failed so miserably and the QX is not a high volume vehicle. So 2 of the 3 Infiniit SUVs suck so bad with sales it makes your attempt look good. They WANT to sell more SUVs, but they can't. I won't mention why they don't sell.

I guess you are uptight waiting for the "Essence" to come. Unbelieveable you are defending a company that will possibly have 2 cars and 4 SUVs.

No wonder some people don't take the Japanese brands seriously.

You missed my point entirely. Obviously Lexus has a bigger lineup of vehicles that they offer. Doesn't change the FACT that most of their sales (currently 52%) come from SUVs (thus making them the "Japanese Jeep"). The fact that Lexus offers so many passenger cars and Infiniti has almost caught up to them with only 2 models speaks volumes as to the SUV top-heavy reality that makes up the bulk of all Lexus sales. This is not a July 2010 thing. This is the way it always is. You want more numbers?

YTD 2010 Lexus sales:

63,088 SUVs (51% of total sales)
62,937 passenger cars (49% of total sales)

YTD 2010 Infiniti sales:

15,920 SUVs (28% of total sales)
41,144 passenger cars (72% of total sales)

Take out the RX, and Lexus total sales are literally cut in almost half. So why does Lexus have to rely so heavily on (1) SUV to bring in the big sales numbers?

Just because Infiniti offers 3 SUVs (as does Lexus, as does Acura), that does not make them the Japanese Jeep (especially when only 28% of their sales depend on SUVs - unlike Lexus where 50% of their sales DEPEND of their (1) hot-selling SUV.

PS: I love how you include models in the Lexus lineup that haven't even come out yet (LFA, CT) let alone have any sales success or lack their of (but if we're doing that, then make sure you include the 2 upcoming vehicles that Infiniti is about to reveal this month).

This year, Lexus sales have shifted towards the SUV spectrum with the RX being the newest model. However, Lexus OVERALL has 3 main bread-winners: IS, ES, and RX. Moreover, with all the cars Lexus has in its lineup, they don't rely on any 1 model type the way Infiniti relies on the G. Historically, IS makes up about 17-18%, RX about 36%, and ES about 25%. In general, cars have outsold SUVs, including six years of the past ten.

In 2007, the Lexus ratio was about 60% car to 40% SUV, similar in 2008. Going back to 2005, a similar situation where the RX was the newest model, it was closer to 50/50. But then going back to 2001 and 2002, it was again about 60% to 40%. That squares up with the historical average for the entire Lexus line. So overall, Lexus remains primarily a car marque, with a strong SUV business as well.

But anyhow, going to the point, Lexus has more car models than SUVs. Infiniti will have the opposite, despite them not having much volume.

Thank you for logging into Clublexus to post twice to save Nissan/Infiniti today.

Sorry YOU missed the point. YOU came in the thread to RESPOND. You don't get it and won't b/c you can't get past the fact the damn brand has 2 cars and potentially 4 SUVs. How cool. Acura has 3 cars and 3 SUVs. How cool.

Lexus has 8 cars and 3 SUVs.

Its not that hard to understand.

Again, you find it convient to talk sales for one month? lol. When anyone can buy a G37. How luxurious. Things flunctate. Some months the RX sells around 40% of volume. With the recall mess things have been tough on Lexus this year. So last month is not what usually happens.

They will have DOUBLE the SUV lines to car lines. That is the Japanese Jeep. Acura has 3 sedans and 3 SUVs.

I know the RX sells. It created the segment it is the standard in class. Some months it OUTSELLS the entire Infiniti brand.

The bottom line is when you walk on a dealer lot, when you see a brochure, when you think of the brands Infiniti has 3 SUV lines and 2 car lines and that is pretty poor.

So essentially Lexus is now heading more in the direction of being the "Japanese Jeep" than ever before. They used to sell more cars than SUVs at one point, but that simply is not the case anymore. Even with the new HS and refreshed ES & LS, they are STILL selling more SUVs than passenger cars.

Thank you, he wants to use ONE MONTH to make some weird point.

We came to talk about the JX, he comes in to defend Infiniti and attack Lexus over the term "Japanese Jeep". (even Lexus admitted the brand had to much RX to total volume and they have slowly fixed that).

lol

How about posting about some info on their FOURTH SUV line (more than Lexus)?

But you see, you and I both know that isn't true. We both know that Infiniti has a compact sedan on the way slotted below the G. We both know that Infiniti is also planning on adding a FWD sedan to compete with the ES. We both know there has been talk of an all-electric passenger car as well. So if and when this new JX comes to market, we both know that Infiniti will likely have at least 1 or 2 additional passenger cars within their lineup, so this nonsense that you speak of about 4 SUVs to 2 car lines is utterly ridiculous. It hasn't happened and won't happen. Just because they trademarked a few names, right away you're jumping to conclusions about them having 4 SUVs and only 2 passenger car lines? oh please

Well, honestly at this point it's 3 and 3. The G coupe and G sedan are two different vehicles. You could even say the G convertible is yet another vehicle in itself. Now add the M sedan and you have 4 different car variations to 3 SUVs. But again, none of this really matters. It really comes down to sales numbers and as I have already proven with stats, 72% of all Infiniti vehicles sold are passenger cars. Whereas at least 50% of all Lexus vehicles sold are SUVs. And no, this is not based on just one month's worth of data, as I showed above. This is a trend based on the past year, past 2 years of sales. I'm sorry you don't like stats, but they don't lie or twist the truth - some posters do though

This could really be broken down so many different ways. If we want to get technical, the RX, FX, and EX aren't really SUVs- they're sedans with 4 more inches of ground clearance and a hatch.

If the G sedan, G coupe, and G Conv. are all different cars, then should we break out the IS 250 and 350, ISc, ISF, LS L, etc?

At the end of the day it doesn't matter. At this moment, Infiniti has one product that reliably sells well every month. Dealers can't practically give away the FX or EX, and IMO that is Infiniti's fault for not doing more to make them attractive. The M has received a lukewarm reception and I'm sure that the arrival of the QX is a welcome one for salespeople. Whether or not they come out with a sub-G product, or an ES competitor, or a go kart, it doesn't really matter at the moment.

Cars: 2

Utility Vehicles: 3

Case closed.

In brand, it really doesn't matter if the vehicle is an SUV, CUV, coupe, sedan or convertible. At least not to me. Those notch up as sales regardless. I was going to point out that the Lexus RX is the bread winner for Lexus (consistently accounting for half of all Lexus sales). But to me it really doesn't matter and it really doesn't matter with Infiniti either because a sale is a sale and these are luxury vehicles that people made a conscious choice to purchase.

Range Rover is exclusively a Sport Utility brand but I certainly see the difference between what they make and the garden variety SUV.

But my feelings with Infiniti, as stated earlier, are that they don't NEED another CUV/SUV and I'd feel the same even if they had 5 cars in their lineup. I'm just not getting the business case for it. I can see a clearer case for an Infiniti GT-R variant than this JX whachamacallit and I'd MUCH rather see that happen. I look at these things and wonder... why? It's the same with BMW and their current obsession with 5-door cuv things.

Specifically if the JX is intended to compete with small CUV's, let's see if they can put any dent in sales of consistently strong-selling CRV and Escape.

Well, Infiniti may not NEED another SUV, but we don't really know what their plan is. All we have right now is a few trademarked names, which could mean anything or nothing. Certainly the FX & EX are not volume vehicles. The QX does really well (second highest selling in class currently), but it's not going to sell in the kind of numbers that the RX & MDX sell in. I really believe they're trying to offer more mainstream products and are looking to increase volume across the lineup. It would make sense for them to come out with an SUV that appeals to the masses - a less polarizing design than the FX that will sell in high numbers. That's my guess anyway.

But really, you see a clearer case for them to come out with an Infiniti GT-R variant than a high volume SUV? Sure, it would be great if they did, but from a sales perspective, it just doesn't make sense right now for them to do that. I think they're looking for volume at this point, so a mainstream SUV makes sense (as does a FWD midsize sedan). Again, they're introducing 2 new vehicles this month at Pebble Beach - one is supposed to be a mainstream vehicle and the other is supposed to be performance-based. NEITHER OF THEM are going to be an SUV
