Default Dainese produces air-bag motorcycle suit, dubbed "D-Air"

Dainese have launched their new road-going airbag suit at the Isle of Man TT.

After a decade of development, the Italian company Dainese says it's close to bringing an airbag-equipped safety suit for bikers to market. The company is planning versions of the suit for the racetrack and the road.

Vittorio Cafaggi, Dainese's head of marketing, told Wired: "We'll start out-selling the racing version. The suit designed for the road will take longer to produce because there are different approval requirements to meet."

The Dainese team is now working with researchers at MIT in the US to test a bio-spacesuit that will serve as a prototype for the moto-racing suit.

Moto GP driver Simone Giorgi has been personally testing Dainese's airbag prototype on the racetrack. This image caught him as he landed unscathed after a bad fall.

I still prefer my airbags to be mounted to the vehicle.

These bike riders need to face the act that this will help but they are still in a lot of danger on those crotch rockets. I once saw a rider spill in LA on the 5 and as he was laying in the road lifeless when a car swerved and ended up running one of his legs over. The impact is only part of the danger in the equation. At least its a start.

Oh good, I'm happy for you guys

Personally, I wont ride a bike until I don't live in Vancouver anymore (way too many stupid drivers here) but I'm glad there will be at least something to help protect you guys from some of the stupids out there.

I only hope that these types of suits stay optional; yea, air bags and seat belts save lives in cars, but I always say just learn to drive better / don't crash
