Can't tell if it is just shiny black tape or a true black paint-job. It's obviously not a REAL half-rear-door.

Perhaps. The general idea, besides the RX-8, was also shared by the Saturn Ion coupe and earlier Saturn coupes that had a single suicide-door on the left side.
I agree with you, though, that the term "silly" certainly applies here.
I certainly wouldn't do that to any car I owned.
