Here it is – the moment we’ve all been waiting for all year, even though we won’t get this model in the United States. Audi today officially took the wraps off of its new and much-anticipated 2011 Audi A1. Sales will begin later this year and according to Audi, many of the A1 customers are expected to be women who are interested in design, music, fashion and sports.

Besides being one of the best looking luxury subcompact cars we’ve ever seen, the Audi A1 is said to be the sportiest and most agile of its class.

Power will come from a range of 4-cylinder engines, two TDI diesels and two TFSI gasoline engines with output ranging from 84-hp to 122-hp. Mated to a 7-speed S tronic transmission, Audi says that fuel-economy will range from 44 mpg and 62 mpg.

The entry-level model will be priced at around 16,000 euros ($22,062 USD).

So far Audi has no plans to bring the 2011 Audi A1 to North America – so we thought we’d try to convince them with a little poll. If you live in North America, cast your vote below to let us know if you would consider purchasing the A1.

It seems like a nice car and for the price its quite reasonable. I just want to see this right next to a Smart Fortwo

Wow...not exactly what I was expecting. This is territory better left to VW.

The front looks ok and not bad for a vehicle of the class, but the back is ugly. Who would buy this over the Mini or 500???? :egads:

Wow, that is a big fail at the rear of the car. What was Audi thinking when they designed this? It reminds of a VW Beetle, and that's not a good thing. That interior looks way too low rent and cheap for an Audi.

I agree that this kind of model should definitely be left to VW. Audi could have at least given it a decent design like the Benz A Class. This makes the 1 Series look gorgeous :thumbdn:.

There is a chance this might be cannibalize sales of some VW models.

not impressed, but I have to wait until I see one live.

Same thing I said maybe a year ago when I first heard about it. I think of the steak sauce, not a freakin car. :D

Anyway, looks pretty similar to the Concept and just like the concept, its an okay looking car. Here is another subcompact/compact with premium features (or nameplate) entering the market. Vehicles like this may have some staying power in the coming years.

I like it. IMO, it looks better than a Mini or Fiat 500 if we are to compare it to something.

I agree with others' sentiments that this should just be branded a VW but then a few key Audi styling trademarks would have to be switched to VW (headlights, grill, ect.). So we have VW which offered a top line luxury car [Pheaton], and then Audi offering a sub-compact. :uh: Imagine if Toyota and Lexus pulled that type of marketing. Just think, a Toyota LS600hL and a Lexus Corolla. :p

That said, Europe is a whole different market. They pay top dollar for premium small cars. Americans don't. so this type of thing probably makes sense to them. there's a reason it's not coming here. I wish they would bring it here as a VW though and cheapen it up a bit (sub $20K).
