You can achieve a much higher density of cars with this system. In a traditional parking garage, over 50% of the square footage can be lost to thruways. It's terribly inefficient. Add to this loss what you lose in the height of each floor, which has to be high enough for higher SUVS to navigate, plus the structure to hold up a whole floor of cars. The structure alone can take up to 4 feet per floor of wasted volume. Add in safety barriers, stairways, and elevators required for any building that people occupy, and the space advantage becomes clear.
With this automated system, cars can be packed in closer, tighter, and with no chance of door dings, theft, or vandalism.
In America a system like this seems silly where we can park on the street for a few coins per hour. But in Tokyo, space is at an absolute premium. You should see the extents they go to due to this simple fact. Not just for cars, but just about everything in their everyday lifestyle.
So while this seems like a crazy expense, it's worth it for them.
Remember, you can't put up a high rise without having the parking available to serve the building adequately. For some developers, this system may be the only way to build the high rise they want along with the required parking within the space constraints they have to work in.

The Tokyo area in terms of size is only 75% the size of the LA area, yet Tokyo's population is over twice that of LA.
Tokyo is an extremely dense city. Space is at an absolute premium, and the cost of such marvels as this parking garage are small compared to the amount of space saved.
Some people live by the expression "time is money", well in Tokyo space is money. By saving space you are saving lots of money in Tokyo.

Its its good enough for the GTR in the video, then it should be good enough for our Lexus'
WOnder how it works when you retrieve your car, is it like punching in C8, and your car gets brought to you?
Pretty cool concept. But in the land of America where everything is bigger must mean better, its unfortunate that the concept won't adapt. Unfortunately.
